The only thing I have left is a mermaid hanging on my wall

an ornamental item aboard my uncles old boat

when he died it was in my yard collecting leaves

barnacles covered the hull ending with the waterline

old eroded wood surrounded the cockpit

spent many days sitting behind the wheel brushing the deck

taking out the rot scraping the sides

the things that are gone without return are lost at sea

at that time so was I

held on to what I could to survive

I kept the mermaid to remind me
