It was a long goodnight

your fist raised

you stopped when you heard

the mockingjays

they told you gleams

of brighter days

when we went to church

and under God we praised

Oh it was such a long goodnight

one I wish I could remember better

those ice cold gardenias

in mid merry December

they had stories of their own to tell

inside each budding member

That was back when

I was your garden tender

It was a long, long goodnight

and I know you regret it

I keep reminding you so it won't happen again

So you'll never ever forget it

don't be sad now

I know you won't let it

for that night was so long ago dear

and I know all too well

how both of us dread it.
