It was always scary to think about, but being someone who isn't black it never bothered me enough to do something about it. I cared about the issue; I read all the articles, stayed informed  and even shared some of the heartbreaking stories from time to time. After a couple of days I went about my day and forgot about it later on. However, seeing a father get killed on footage and imagining a child growing up without guidance left me a little more teary eyed than I expected. The issue finally hit me. I don't know if it was because I imagined myself in that situation (to be face to face with someone who was supposed to protect you and in just seconds, they pull the trigger and just like that it's like you never existed), or I imagined someone I loved in that situation. I always had an "every man for themselves attitude." I thought the situation was horrible of course, but I didn't worry about it because it wasn't me. The thing is, it very well could have been. It was wrong of me to think that way and for that I am sorry. It is absolutely unacceptable that we no longer feel safe in the hands of the people who are supposed to put bad guys away. It is absolutely unacceptable that an innocent black person can't go for a drive without having to worry if they were going to be next on the headlines. I'm not black, and this particular scenario may never happen to me, but it doesn't mean it won't happen to someone I love. This tweet touched me because it's true. You don't have to be black to care about their issues, and honestly, if it was happening to your race you wouldn't want anyone belittling the situation and focusing on other people that have it better. Yes, all lives matter. That's something that everyone knows. However, not everybody else have to go through racism and police brutality at the moment. #BlackLivesMatter because they're the ones who are treated like they don't. The responsibility falls to the rest of us to help their voices be louder and do what we can to make them feel that their lives matter, because they do.
