I think most of you will have met my sister at some time or other, and perhaps my brother too.

Have You Met My Sister?

Have you met my sister,
You have, I'm pretty certain,
She is one for company
And always she is flirtin'.
She's a sociable old bird
The people that she's seen,
You might not know her by name
But you'll know when she has been.

The sentence that you've written
Those words that you just spoke
You're wishing you could take them back
You'd meant them as a joke;
Or you meant them in a different way
To that in which they're taken
You never meant to hurt someone
Your confidence is shaken.

Guilt, that is my sister's name
If you'd not already guessed,
You'll know when she has visited
And with your head she's messed.
She'll leave you feeling rather sick
You think you might be ill.
Should you see a doctor
To get some kind of pill?

She's played her tricks so many times,
She practices on me,
Her tricks need to be perfected
Before she sets them free.
Sometimes she doesn't come alone
But brings along another,
More of my family accompany her
Remorse, he is my brother!

They do not bring a happy life,
They meddle with their magic,
They will take something that is small
And turn it into 'tragic'.
So let them visit but not stay
You can't beat them at their game,
Guilt and Remorse don't follow rules
You'll never be the same.

So when they come a visitin'
For coffee and a chat,
Don't invite them in for lunch
But let it end at that.
They want a bed in every house,
A door to which to bind,
Guilt and Remorse are hard to evict
When they occupy your mind.
