They Came and Went
Episode 11 “Hold”

(Early in the morning, Renee, Strahovski, Delaney and Justin are standing outside, across from the front door of the cabin. They’re about to take a walk. Derek, Kim and Chris watch as they prepare to leave.)

RENEE:
We won’t be gone too long.

DEREK:
And you’re sure about doing this?

RENEE:
Yep.

STRAHOVSKI:
Most definitely.

DEREK:
I don’t know, I’m still paranoid.

RENEE:
Don’t be. We can handle ourselves out here. We’ll only be gone for an hour, maybe 2.

DELANEY:
Maybe 3 or 4.

RENEE:
(to Delaney)Hell no. Let’s not give our new friends a heart attack, we’re just taking a short walk. (to Derek)Trust us.

DEREK:
Ok Renee, but it’s just not safe.

CHRIS:
He’s right, it’s not.

RENEE:
It’s been over a week since anyone has seen an alien. You guys look outside the windows, no aliens. You and Chris take people out for gun training, and you haven’t seen any aliens. There’s no armies, or any ships flying around. I don’t want to be too hopeful, but maybe, just maybe, they‘re starting to actually leave.

DEREK:
That’s possible, but I don’t want to push our luck. Maybe they’ve left this area, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe. We have enough supplies to just stay in the cabin. It’s not a permanent solution, just for now.

 RENEE:
No offense, but if me and my boys stay in that basement any longer, we’ll shoot ourselves.

DEREK:
Renee-

RENEE:
It’s fine, we’ll come back.

STRAHOVSKI:
Look uh, Derek? I know you haven’t seen much of our survival skills up close, but I can assure you that the 4 of us know how to keep each other’s asses alive in any given situation.

RENEE:
(to Derek)Do you remember when we first met your group?

STRAHOVSKI:
It was really bad. Really bad.

(Renee nods)

STRAHOVSKI:
And we still made it. It was rough, but we made it. This? Now? A pretty day, nice breeze, no fucking big-eyed freaks in sight. This is a cake walk. Anyone that tries to kill us is already dead.

RENEE:
And the last thing we would do is lure trouble back here with us.

JUSTIN:
We’ll double-back, make sure no one followed us back here.

RENEE:
And I know you have a lot of food and water and shit, but I guarantee we will find something useful to you while walking around. Maybe more condoms. Some of your friends look a little frustrated. (winks)

DEREK:
I think having sex is the least of everyone’s worries right now.

STRAHOVSKI:
You a mind-reader, or are you just assuming that? (puts hands up) Just saying.

DEREK:
(sighs) …2 hours is a long time. A lot can happen in 2 hours. That doesn’t sit well with me.

(Renee makes an annoyed face)

DEREK:
Tell you what, come back in an hour and a half, and you’ll have my full confidence.

RENEE:
(smiles) Deal.

JUSTIN:
(to Kim) Alright babe, we’ll be back soon.

(Justin and Kim kiss 1, 2, 3 times. They then kiss again, longer and more dramatically. Strahovski makes eye-contact with Renee and does beating-heart gestures with his fingers, referring to Justin. Renee shakes her head to herself.)

KIM:
(stops kissing) Be careful.

JUSTIN:
(smiles) Yes ma’am.

DEREK:
Come back.

RENEE:
We will, promise.

(The 4 depart as Derek, Chris and Kim watch)

CHRIS:
(to Derek)Do you think they’ll make it back ok?

DEREK:
I don’t see why not. Come on, let’s go back inside.

(Cut to Renee’s group, still walking away from the cabin)

STRAHOVSKI:
So, 2 and a half hours?

RENEE:
Who’s the best girlfriend ever?

STRAHOVSKI:
I don’t know, I have so many.

RENEE:
Uh!

STRAHOVSKI:
Joking, joking. Obviously you.

RENEE:
(blushes)You really think so?

STRAHOVSKI:
Without a doubt.

(Cut to the 4 still walking around together. They’re about a mile away from the cabin now)

RENEE:
So Justin, how are you and Kim doing?

JUSTIN:
Great. We’re great.

STRAHOVSKI:
It looked like it back there.

JUSTIN:
Yeah, we’re doing good. Taking things slow. Well, certain parts of the relationship slow. She’s a good girl and a bit of a bad girl.

RENEE:
Oh, perfect for you.

JUSTIN:
I know right?

(Cut to later. The 4 are sitting together in a circle, drinking water bottles and eating some snacks. They‘re in a forest.)

JUSTIN:
So Strav, when are you going to start teaching me Russian?

STRAHOVSKI:
Never. You’re not committed enough.

JUSTIN:
Awwww, come on man!

DELANEY:
I just realized. You and Kim are together, and Renee and Strav are together. That makes me the odd one out. Gotta get myself a girlfriend.

JUSTIN:
You can do it, man. You just have to believe in yourself.

DELANEY:
I’m hopeful about it.

RENEE:
Yeah Delaney, I’m sure no girl can resist you. Except for me.

DELANEY:
Well, it’s not like I have a lot of options. Basically all of the chicks in the cabin. The rest of the world might be dead, for all we know.

STRAHOVSKI:
Nah.

JUSTIN:
Well, since the only girls we know right now are the ones in the cabin, you should weigh your options. There’s Rosalyn, who I already tried to get with before fate intervened and paired me with a better girl. Though don’t get me wrong, Rosalyn is still good.

RENEE:
She’s very pretty.

DELANEY:
Yeah…

JUSTIN:
And there’s Riley. She would be a good match for you.

RENEE:
I wouldn’t try to get with her. Derek is super-protective of that girl. He might slit your throat in your sleep.

STRAHOVSKI:
Jesus, don’t scare the guy.

DELANEY:
Ugh.(puts his hands in his face) I am doomed to eternal sex-deprivation.

JUSTIN:
Nah man, you’ll find a girl.

DELANEY:
If I even live long enough to find one.

RENEE:
Don’t talk like that.

DELANEY:
You’re right, I shouldn’t talk like that. It’s just hard not to. We could all die. It could happen, if we’re not careful. Or it could just be bad luck or something.

RENEE:
We’re not dying. None of us, ever. We’re all going to live to be old, grumpy people that die in our sleep.

JUSTIN:
Everyone here believes in god, right? I once read this bible verse. “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (smiles) Joshua 1:8

DELANEY:
We don’t even have a bible.

JUSTIN:
Well, when I think about that verse, it kinda sounds to me like it doesn’t represent the bible, but life itself.

(It’s quiet for a moment)

RENEE:
I’m so happy aliens are starting to leave this area. Maybe they’re clearing out for good, leaving the planet even.

STRAHOVSKI:
You know it’s too early to assume that.

RENEE:
Yeah, but a girl can dream.

STRAHOVSKI:
All I’m saying is that we need to be careful. There might be less aliens around as of late, but we should keep an eye out. It’s what all of our friends that didn’t make it would want us to do.

RENEE:
Oh don’t worry, I have my guard up.

JUSTIN:
Alright, anyone else bored? Let’s keep walking.

RENEE:
Yeah.

(the 4 get up and continue to walk and explore the area)

RENEE:
Wait, we need to go to some buildings.

STRAHOVSKI:
Why?

RENEE:
I told Derek I’d find something of use to bring back.

STRAHOVSKI:
You should get him a butt-plug.

RENEE:
Come on now, babe. Derek’s a good guy, he’s just trying to keep everyone alive. And that’s not easy nowadays. Over there! (points to a house ahead) Let’s go.

(The 4 walk towards the house, but suddenly hear bushes brustling)

RENEE:
(holds hand up) Stop!

STRAHOVSKI:
I heard it too.

JUSTIN:
Get in position!

(the 4 immediately stand in a circle, back-to-back, each pointing their guns and scanning the area)

RENEE:
Anyone see anything?

STRAHOVSKI:
Nothing.

RENEE:
We have to be sure.

DELANEY:
What made that noise?

JUSTIN:
Guys, I see it! It’s just a deer.

(they all turn to see what Justin is pointing at. Sure enough, a deer is walking by, a few feet away)

RENEE:
A deer! Jesus, that scared the shit out of me!

STRAHOVSKI:
(laughs)Better this than an alien.

RENEE:
(shrugs) At least we have something real to eat tonight. Hassie will be happy. (is about to shoot the deer)

JUSTIN:
No! Let me do it!

RENEE:
You sure?

JUSTIN:
Yeah. I’ve never shot a deer before.

RENEE:
Do you know how to?

JUSTIN:
I’m gonna go with ‘aim at the face’. Alright…(points his gun at the deer)

(Suddenly, a rocket goes straight to Justin and explodes, killing him and sending Renee, Strahovski and Delaney flying backwards. A few yards away, we see what shot the rocket- an alien hiding in a tree, holding an advanced tech RPG. He’s by himself, looking ahead proudly at the humans he’s found. There’s a blue tooth-like device on the side of his head that he’s talking to.)

ALIEN:
Clllk-clllk-clllk(I found a few humans)

VOICE ON THE DEVICE:
Cllllk-cllk(Do you need back-up?)

ALIEN:
Cllllk-cllk.(No, I’m taking care of them)

(Renee, Strahovski and Delaney are lying on the ground with minor injuries, the latter 2 laying near each other, a few yards in front of Renee. All 3 start to sit up and process what just happened)

RENEE:
Are you guys ok?

DELANEY:
Justin’s dead. (stands up)What the fuck just happened?!

RENEE:
NO, GET DOWN!

(the alien shoots another rocket, hitting Delaney directly and killing him, and sending Strahovski flying again)

(Renee is unable to see where the alien is, and crawls backwards a few feet before standing up. She lost her gun from the blast and can’t find anyone else’s. Though emotional, she calms herself quickly and hides behind a tree)

(The alien climbs out of the tree he was in and walks to the carnage. There are human remains and body parts everywhere. He smiles and walks to Strahovski, who’s laying on the ground unconscious. The alien takes out a gun and points it at his head. Renee, still behind a tree, sees this from a distance)

RENEE:
(reveals herself)Hey! Forget about me, fucker!?

(This catches the alien’s attention. He shoots at Renee a few times, but she gets behind the tree again and the shots miss her. Renee then runs, and the alien chases after her)

(Renee runs as fast as she can as the alien vigorously runs from behind her, but she’s faster and is starting to get away. He shoots at her a few times, but once again they miss her. After a few moments, the alien can’t see her at all and stops, looking around in case she’s hiding somewhere around him. Suddenly, Renee jumps at him from behind and tries to grab the gun, but the alien angrily holds onto it and the 2 struggle.

The alien tries to overpower her and point the gun at her head. Renee continues to fight back and keep it from her head, but the alien continues to get it closer to her. She finally head butts him; however, the alien hits her in the face with the gun, causing her to fall to the ground. He sits up and is about to shoot her, but she kicks him in the face.

She then runs to the gun and kicks it out of the way, then starts beating the alien, punching him in the face over and over again until he’s beaten within an inch of his life. She then pulls out a knife and stabs him in the throat. The alien’s eyes widen in pain as he gags. Renee then pulls the knife out and stabs him in the head, over and over, screaming while she does it)

(The alien’s head is now a bloody mess. Renee, covered in alien blood and her blood, pants and stares down at him)

RENEE:
That was for Justin and Delaney.

(She then looks up, remembering Strahovski, and runs back to him. She briefly looks around at the remains of Justin and Delaney before Strahovski, now awake, gets her attention)

STRAHOVSKI:
Renee?

RENEE:
Hey.(holds his hand tightly, trembling, upset and happy that he’s alive at the same time)Oh my god, are you ok?

STRAHOVSKI:
Justin and Delaney….

(Renee tearfully shakes her head. Strahovski’s face saddens. He seems somewhat dazed)

RENEE:
We need to get back. More of them might have heard all of the noise and gun-shots. Can you walk?

STRAHOVSKI:
I….no. I think my legs are broken or something. I can’t get up.

(Renee looks down and, to her horror, sees that Strahovski’s legs are missing just below the knee, and bleeding profusely in a puddle)

STRAHOVSKI:
What is it? What’s wrong?(looks down at his missing legs, and the color drains from his face)Oh my god.

RENEE:
No, no, it’s going to be ok. You’re going to be ok.

STRAHOVSKI:
Holy fuck.

RENEE:
(leans forward, trying to stay calm)Babe, listen to me. I’m going to get your through this.

STRAHOVSKI:
I can’t believe this is happening right now. This shit’s real.

(Strahovski is continuing to bleed out. Renee desperately looks around and tries to figure out what to do)

RENEE:
Ok, I just need to get you back to the cabin. But first I have to…I have to stop the bleeding.

STRAHOVSKI:
How?

RENEE:
I have to cauterize the wounds.

STRAHOVSKI:
What?

(Renee leaps up and looks around)

RENEE:
I need Justin’s bag. He kept paper in it. There it is!(runs to Justin’s bag that’s been lying on the ground a few feet away. Renee opens it up and grabs all of the paper inside it, then runs to a thick tree branch. Pointing her gun at the middle of it, she fires, causing the tree branch to break off. She then grabs the branch, and removes her belt from her jeans, and ties all of the paper around the end of the branch tightly and then tying it in a knot. Renee then takes out a lighter from her pocket, and lights the branch on fire. She then runs back to Stahovski.

STRAHOVSKI:
What are you doing, you’re not seriously-

RENEE:
This is the only way I can save you. Sorry about this.

(Renee then presses the branch against one of Strahovski’s legs as he screams at the top of his lungs in agony. After a moment, Strahovski passes out, and Renee applies the branch to his other leg)

(Cut to a few moments later. Renee, being rather tall and strong, is running back to the cabin with Strahovski in her arms. His legs are wrapped in bandages and he’s wrapped in a blanket. She’s scared but determined to save his life)

(Back at the cabin, all of Derek’s group are in the basement except for Nicholas, Shea and Timmy, who are above them by the front door, standing guard and holding guns just in case they need them. In the basement, Derek, Riley, Chris and Kim are playing a card game at a table)

CHRIS:
Yeah, I’m going to win.

RILEY:
In your dreams.

(outside, Renee runs to the front door and knocks on it loudly)

RENEE:
OPEN THE DOOR!

(Almost everyone in the cabin is alerted)

SHEA:
DEREK!

(Derek, Chris, Riley and Hassie grab their guns and run upstairs. Even Taylor, who’s arm is in a cast, grabs a gun with his other arm and follows them up. Renee knocks again)

RENEE:
OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR NOW!

(Shea goes to the window beside the door and looks through it)

SHEA:
It’s Renee!

DEREK:
Open it!

(Shea opens the door and Renee comes running in with Stahovski. Everyone looks at them in shock. Riley gasps and puts her hands to her mouth)

RENEE:
Where should I lay him down?!

DEREK:
Just lay him down here!

(Renee lays Strahovski on the floor)

TIMMY:
What the shit?

RILEY:
I’ll get the first aid kits!(runs downstairs)

RENEE:
Is- is he still breathing?

CHRIS:
(bends down) Yeah, I’ve got a pulse. He’s very pale, though.

(Riley comes running back with 3 first aid kits)

RILEY:
I wasn’t sure how many we needed.

DEREK:
That should be good.

(Shea and Timmy bend down and tend to Strahovski)

SHEA:
We’ve been reading a few books on how to help people with injuries like this, in case it happened.

TIMMY:
Yeah, we’ll do our best.

RENEE:
Just please save him.

DEREK:
Renee, what happ-

RENEE:
We were getting more supplies, and there was a- fucking ALIEN hiding in a damn tree! It shot rockets. Delaney and Justin are dead. I killed the alien.

CHRIS:
Are you sure there weren’t any others following y-

RENEE:
NO there weren’t any others following us!

DEREK:
We’re going to do everything we can for him, ok?

(All Derek, Renee and everyone else can do is watch as Timmy and Shea work on Strahovski)

RENEE:
I- I cauterized the legs.

SHEA:
Yeah, we see that. Nice job.

RENEE:
(in tears)This was my fault. We should’ve stayed here today. You fucking told me to stay here.

DEREK:
It could’ve happened to anyone. I’ve seen people in the safest places I could imagine getting killed.

CHRIS:
Yeah, if that alien was out there while I was taking someone out to train…

RENEE:
That’s bullshit. We would’ve been safe if I listened to you.

DEREK:
Your friends seemed like they knew what they wanted, I don’t think you could’ve talked them out of it.

RENEE:
I could’ve tried. I wanted to get out, too. I was a fucking idiot, and now they’re dead…

DEREK:
Renee, look-

(Renee ignores him and goes downstairs)

(About a half-hour later, Renee is still downstairs, staring blankly at a wall. Shea and Timmy walk to her, and she turns to them eagerly)

RENEE:
How is he?

SHEA:
We did everything we could, but- he had already lost so much blood. And there’s internal bleeding that can’t be stopped. Maybe if it was just one leg, things might be different, but…

(Renee closes her eyes and looks down)

TIMMY:
We’re really sorry.

SHEA:
Renee, um…he’s conscious.

RENEE:
What?

SHEA:
Yeah, he just woke up. He’s really confused about what happened. If you can, I think you should talk to him. He doesn’t have much time left.

(Cut back to upstairs. Renee is sitting beside Strahovski)

STRAHOVSKI:
Christ babe, what a day, huh?

RENEE:
(smiles weakly) We’ve had better.

(Strahovski relaxes and looks off ahead)

STRAHOVSKI:
Justin…Delaney…I thought we were all unstoppable. I thought we were the superheroes of the new world. Well, you are. Not me, obviously.(laughs)

RENEE:
I’m sorry…

STRAHOVSKI:
For what, babe? This isn’t your fault at all. If anyone’s sorry, it should be me. We were a team…a family, we did things as one. (laughs) You know, the funny thing is…this, compared to some of the other days, all the friends we lost, going through that hell…this isn’t even that bad of a day. Is that selfish?

RENEE:
(tears go down her cheeks)No! No, I’m glad it’s not.(gently rubs his head)

STRAHOVSKI:
We were a unit of one…and now we’re leaving you behind. I’m so angry that I’m leaving you behind, but at the same time…I know you’re with a good group now. You were right about them, they’re good people. You were always right.

RENEE:
I wasn’t right today.

STRAHOVSKI:
We weren’t right today. Mistakes happen.

RENEE:
I don’t want you to leave.

STRAHOVSKI:
Wish there was a choice. Mostly because I don’t want be away from you. You’re too gorgeous.

(They pause for a moment. Renee is still wracked with guilt)

STRAHOVSKI:
Renee…death is not so bad. I had a lot of fun, and I met you. People that measure their lives in years… they make a mistake. Quality beats quantity. I’ve lived a good life.

(Renee smiles at him)

STRAHOVSKI:
(puts his hand on her face)It’s alright.

(A few moments later, they’re still together. We see Renee holding Strahovski’s hand against her, and then the hand slips out of frame, and Renee’s eyes widen in shock and sadness and she begins crying. Cut to a shot of the now dead Strahovski)

(Cut to the next morning. Somewhere far away from the cabin, 3 crosses are seen above 3 buried pits in the ground, as Renee, Derek and the rest mourn the deaths of Strahovski, Justin and Delaney. This time, everyone has left the cabin and is present, no one is afraid of leaving anymore. Derek, Riley and Chris stare at the graves silently, sad and paying their respects to the fallen people. Kim is crying, focused on Justin. Renee is simply pale and red-eyed, having cried so much already. She looks blankly at the graves as if she herself is half-dead)

(Cut to later. Everyone is back in the basement. Renee is sitting by herself in a chair, drinking a flask of vodka. Derek walks up to her)

DEREK:
Hey. How are you?

RENEE:
What do you mean?

DEREK:
I’m just worried about you. We all are.

RENEE:
I feel like shit. And don’t try to change that. And tell your friends to quit feeling sorry for me. I don’t need that crap.

DEREK:
Well….is there anything I can do? Anything you need?

RENEE:
I thought I believed in god. After everything that happened, I thought that through all this mess, somehow there was still a heaven, and maybe a plan. Isn‘t that the craziest thing? To actually think there’s still some big guy in the sky and that somehow this is all a part of some fucking PLAN?!

(Derek simply looks at Renee with sadness)

RENEE:
(sighs)And now I think it all makes sense. There is no god. There’s no heaven. That shit is just lies that we cling to, to make it better. And things get worst and worst, and it’s ok, because we tell ourselves something some dude made up thousands of years ago. Until everything gets so bad that you can’t take it anymore, even with the heaven bullshit. It’s just a lie everyone tells themselves until the real shit catches up.

(They both pause. Renee takes another deep breath and remains silent for a moment)

DEREK:
I….I don’t know if I believe in heaven anymore. You might be right about that. But, Renee…I know I have no idea what you‘re feeling right now. We all have lost people, and it’s different for everyone, but…maybe this isn’t the end. Maybe it isn’t.

RENEE:
If there is no heaven, then that means that my friends and boyfriend are gone, forever. They’re nothing now, just like the rest of the world. All of the dead are gone. And these aliens are still here and killing us all. There’s no hope. Look me in the eye, and tell me there’s still hope.

(Derek doesn’t know how to respond)

RENEE:
Yeah.(stands up and walks away)

(Derek remains by himself. Feeling very sympathetic to Renee and useless to help her, he lets out a heavy sigh)

(Cut to the next day. Everyone is hanging around in the cabin. Most of them are in a melancholy mood due to the past couple of days. Chris is continuing to lift mini weights. Nicholas is sitting on a couch by himself, eating a container of cashews. He looks upset. Hassie walks up to him)

HASSIE:
Hey Nick.

NICHOLAS:
Hey.

(Hassie sits beside him)

NICHOLAS:
(holds out container to her)Want some?

HASSIE:
Nah, I just ate a bunch of cheez its. Let’s just say I’m full now. There were many cheez its involved in full stomach conquest.

NICHOLAS:
Heh, whatever.

HASSIE:
You ok?

NICHOLAS:
What are you, my therapist now?

HASSIE:
No, I’m your friend. I’ve never seen you like this before. You’re always the happiest dude in the hood. Yes, I’m being pointlessly ghetto… bra.

NICHOLAS:
(smiles and shakes head)You are strange.

HASSIE:
Aww, thanks. I take that as a compliment.

(Nicholas nods. They pause)

HASSIE:
Seriously though, what’s up?

NICHOLAS:
I just can’t stop thinking about Renee’s friends. I didn’t get to know them very much, personally. And not just those guys, but Arin, and Ashley. And the entire world.

(Hassie looks at Nicholas with understanding)

NICHOLAS:
I thought that I could stay positive and keep my chin up, for everyone else. I wanted to help people, let everyone know that it’s not all bad, and just…make a difference, you know? Because, I believed that…the tinniest happy moment can make such a difference in people’s lives. I wanted to do that for people here, help them deal with this. If we’re a team…I wanted to…be the rock. Help keep people going no matter what shit came our way. But after everything, the bodies just keep piling up. And I’m starting to drift.

HASSIE:
Nicholas…

NICHOLAS:
It’s not easy to be positive anymore, Hassie. And now it’s like the tables are almost turning. Everyone else is getting stronger, and on the inside, I’m giving up. And it pisses me off. I’m doubting the point to all of this, and I don’t know what to do about it.

HASSIE:
Ok, first off, you are being way too hard on yourself. It’s only human to have doubts, we all have moments where we doubt ourselves, others, our chances of making it out of all of this alive. But facing horrible things, really hardcore shit like this, and going through it…that just means that you’re living.

NICHOLAS:
That might’ve applied before aliens came and butt-fucked our planet in the ass.

HASSIE:
It still applies. I think about everyone that’s died, and my friends and family. And god, it sucks. It’s horrible. But I’m not giving up. These aliens aren’t going to break me, and they shouldn’t break you, either. People are saying it’s the end of the world. But no, it’s not. If we can survive the great depression, and George W. Bush, we can survive aliens. If there was no hope, none of us would be alive. But we are alive.

NICHOLAS:
But for how long?

HASSIE:
As long as it takes to beat this somehow. Staying in this cabin seems to work ok. I’d say we keep taking it one day at a time. The survivors have a job to do, and a part of that job is hoping. So yeah, you just need to keep hoping.

NICHOLAS:
…thanks Hassie. You’ve given me something to think about.

HASSIE:
(smiles)You’re welcome.

(they hug)

(Cut to Derek leaning against a wall. He looks deep in thought. Chris walks up to him)

CHRIS:
How is she holding up?

DEREK:
She’s lost her friends. She’s not great, but I think she just needs time.

CHRIS:
Well, I hope that she pulls it together. We need her.

DEREK:
(annoyed)What do you mean we need her? She’s a human being Chris, she’s not an object for us to use.

CHRIS:
I’m just saying she seems pretty capable. Especially if she can kill an alien by herself and run back here carrying a half-dead guy. Ah, that was a bit insensitive, wasn’t it?

DEREK:
You said it, not me.

CHRIS:
What about you?

DEREK:
Me? I’m just…trying to keep everyone safe. All of this must have been really hard for you before. Being a leader isn’t easy.

CHRIS:
You get used to it.

(Chris walks away, leaving Derek to continue to ponder on things)

(Later in the day, Nicholas is standing guard by the front door in the cabin. He’s holding a machine gun, and walks over to a can of mixed nuts that’s sitting on a chair beside the door. He grabs a handful and tosses them in his mouth to eat. Suddenly, he’s alerted by a noise.

Someone on the other side of the door is trying to open it. The door is locked, but the knob keeps turning left and right as someone continues to try to open it. They’re talking, and he can tell it’s an alien’s voice. Slightly freaked out but calm, Nicholas carefully points his gun at the door and slowly reaches out to unlock it. He unlocks the knob and then quickly swings the door open)

(Nicholas’ eyes widen in shock as he sees an alien holding a futuristic phone against his head. It looked like it was talking to someone. The alien looks back at Nicholas with the same shock. It drops it’s phone and attempts to pull out it’s gun, but Nicholas shoots it multiple times. The alien flies backwards and lies on the ground, dead.  Nicholas walks forward to the corpse, which is in a puddle, and then looks at the phone laying beside it. He begins to worry that their cabin is now exposed)
