Chapter 10

"Do you know what happened with Cami?" Ethan hadn't seen her in a few days.

"What, you're missing that skank already?" Juliet grumbled from her desk.

"I have never known you to insult someone like that. Sheesh did you really get that jealous?" He teased her.

He was being daring because it was the last day he would be volunteering at the hospital. He was graduating tomorrow and then it was off to work for Dom.

"She doesn't know the meaning of hands off." She hissed.

"What did you do to her?"

"Nothing and you shouldn't worry because you're never seeing her again."

He stared at her.

"No Ethan, I didn't murder the girl. God, I wouldn't kill someone because they made me angry. Then again..."

"Then what happened to her?"

"They transferred her up to ICU. She'll be working there for now on. It's for the best."

"For the best to your favor." He chuckled. "And as to I won't be seeing her again, we'll see. I might end up working here one day."

"You know what type of doctor you want to be?" She smiled.

"I do and I am not going to tell you."

"You don't have to. I'll just ask Dom what classes he's paying for."

He rolled his eyes. "You should wait for the surprise. Although I think you people are going to be thinking I'm strange when I tell you."

"Are you going to be a foot doctor? Do you have some secret foot fetish where you want to suck their toes? Did you do that to Avery?"

"Eww, no I'm not going to be a foot doctor. And no, I wouldn't ever put a toe in my mouth, even if it was Avery's." He frowned. "Do you think she likes that though?"

She giggled. "I don't know and I don't ever want to find out. I thought you were going to move on."

"It's only been a few months since she left. True love doesn't go away."

"I believe you. So graduate boy, are we still all meeting up to go out to eat after graduation?"

"You don't all have to go. I can eat with my family."

"We're going because we want to support you. You worked hard and well you're part of the family just like Katherine."

"Thanks and in truth I would like to see familiar faces in the crowd."

"Great. I bet Katherine is going to be screaming the loudest when they call your name."

"She does have a good pair of lungs." He laughed.

Juliet gasped. "Are you going to be a lung doctor?"

"No."

"It was worth a try. I'm going to decypher everything that comes out of your mouth to see if you're giving out hints."

He shook his head smiling. "I won't be but you can try."

"This year is so exciting. You're graduating then going off to college with Katherine. You're both going to study to become doctors. Avery is in Paris studying to be the best pastry chef she can be. Katherine is getting married at the end of the year. I am having an excellent time with Kerim as are Delilah and Daniel. Everything is perfect."

"And it's going to stay that way. I'm staying away from anything that screams trouble."

"Me too. We'll be safe."

Ethan thought about his life for a while more as he finished his last few volunteer hours. He said goodbye to Juliet and headed out.

He was going to meet up with Dom to talk over his schedule for the summer. He was going to be working almost everyday with him.

His job was going to be his personal assistant. Dom was looking to expand his business and make some more investments.

There were meetings he was going to have to be going and Ethan was going to be there taking notes. He would do other mischellaneous things for him too.

It didn't sound at all bad.

He went home to shower quickly and change. Then he went to the store Dom had told him about.

Dom was already there talking with one of the store assistants. He smiled at him and shook his hand as a greeting.

"Glad you could make it. You're very punctual."

"Thank you Mr. Moreau."

"You can call me Dom, you call Kerim and Daniel by their names."

"Okay...Dom."

"There, now you will try out whatever Kevin puts in front of you."

"What is this going to be for?"

"I need you to not dress in jeans when you're out with me. You have to look business like."

Ethan nodded, understanding. "Alright."

Dom spoke with Kevin and told him which colors to look for. They also matched up things together. Ethan tried on everything. He felt strange in the clothes but knew he should get used to it.

If he was to become a doctor he couldn't exactly wear jeans when he was consulting.

Dom bought pants, shirts, coats, ties, socks and shoes for him. Anything that he was going to need he provided.

"I think you're set. You start monday at nine."

"Thank you for this opportunity. I swear I will work my hardest."

"I don't doubt it. Now go home and enjoy this weekend."

"I will."

Ethan put the bags in the trunk of his car and went to his house. There he hung them up carefully. He was hungry and so he went to the kitchen to get something to eat.

There were leftovers from the night before. His parents were still at work. He didn't have anything to do other than just watch television.

He was in the middle of a television show when his phone rang. It wasn't a known number but he answered anyway.

"Hello." The line was quiet. He greeted again.

"Um, Ethan?"

The air left his lungs.

"Ethan? I got the number off my old phone but I'm not sure if you still have it. It might not even be you and if so I'm sorry for calling the wrong number."

"Avery, it's me. You caught me by surprise. I...I guess I never expected a call from you."

"I know and I'm sorry to bother you."

"It isn't a bother." He swallowed. "How..how are you doing?"

"I'm good, I love the course. I'm learning new things and it's amazing."

"I'm happy for you."

"Thanks, how are you?"

"Great. I'm graduating tomorrow."

"Wow, congratulations. I don't know why I'm so surprised, it is that time of the year and I knew you would work hard."

"I did."

"Right. Um, I don't know what else to say." She chuckled nervously.

"It's been a while since we talked. I can understand." He smiled. "It's good to hear your voice."

"Yours too."

They both paused for a moment.

"Did you mean it?" He couldn't help but ask.

"Mean what?"

"What you said in the letter. Do you really love me and are you trying to forget me?"

She hesitated. "Yes...and yes. I can't say that I'm succeeding though. I know I shouldn't speak to you like this. Gosh, I don't even know if you have a girlfriend, it would be wrong..."

"I don't have a girlfriend." He interrupted her.

"Oh...you should.."

"No, I can't because I would be lying to her and myself if I tried anything. I can't be with one person and love another. I miss you...a lot."

"I miss you too. I regret the way I told you. I should've been strong enough to tell you in person but I couldn't."

"I get it...I would've begged you to stay anyway. I went after you but you had already left."

"You did?"

"Yes, you're mom was there. I thought she told you."

"She didn't, guess she didn't want to make me sad."

"Are you ever coming back?"

"I don't know...I've been thinking about it but I'm not sure."

"I want you to be happy and if Paris is that place then stay. Maybe one day..."

"Maybe..."

His heart soar a bit. He wasn't sure if he should be hopeful.

"I'll let you go. I just wanted to see how you were doing."

"I'm glad you called. There's someone else who would love to talk to you."

"I know and I'll call."

"Goodbye Avery."

"Bye Ethan and I love you."

"I love you too."

He heard the beep as the phone disconnected. He smiled as he stared at the tv. It felt like the old Avery was back.
