Chapter 19

Ethan had been waiting to speak to Katherine alone but she had taken a few days from school. She had done her assignments at home and had seen the classes by staying connected on the computer.

She finally showed up and he didn't lose the opportunity.

"Who the fuck tried to drown you?"

Her eyebrows raised. "What..what are you talking about?"

"I know you didn't faint. Dom knows it too but he just doesn't want to ask you. You got that red letter the day before and I knew you were freaked out. I could see it in your face and then the next day you mysteriously almost drown. I know it wasn't a coincidence and Precious knows. She only gets that way when there's a strange person and she knows you."

"Well detective then if you could figure that out you should be able to figure out who it was." She scowled. "Look I hadn't connected the dots back to the letters. Although now that you've said it out loud.."

"There's been more than one letter? Why haven't you said anything and what is written in them?"

"They're just creepy poems. At least they were until the last one I got."

"What did it say?"

"That I should be careful." She whispered it. Could the same creep be the one that had been in the bathroom? "Dominik didn't say anything about anyone being in there."

"That's because it looked like you were alone. It was the weird thing about it all. He couldn't have disappeared into thin air. We do think it's a dude right? Because it could've been that guy that bumped into you and only a man could be stronger than you."

"I don't know how the hell he could've gone in and out. Dominik has like this crazy good security system."

"That's what he said but I don't think he's updated it. There are also hackers that can get through it."

"True. I don't want to think about it anymore. I keep trying not to freak out when I'm alone. Dominik has been spending all his time with me. It was hard to explain to my mom and dad why I was staying with him longer than I had said. I told them it had something to do with wedding plans."

"You're not staying with Dom forever, unless you're moving in. Even then though he has work."

"I know. I can't be accompanied 24/7."

"Not unless you tell Dom. He'll be with you and if he can't all the time he'll hire a bodyguard."

"I don't want a bodyguard."

"You need something. I'm going to be here at your side at school and take you home to Dom's or your parents."

"Thanks, I appreciate it." She hugged him.

He was a little surprised but hugged her back. "I think you should still tell him."

"I will but not today. Um, maybe in a few days. I need to get this all sorted out."

"Fine. I'll keep my mouth shut until you say something but make it soon."

She nodded and let him go. "We have to get to class or we're going to be late and you know how much Mr. Norwall likes that."

He put his arm over her shoulders as they walked to class.

"I'm glad that we were finally able to bake something." Ann stood beside Avery and checked over her pastries. "Yours look way better than mine."

"Yes but yours taste better." Avery took another piece.

"Too bad Adam had to miss it. Who gets the flu in september?"

"Your brother does. I'm going to save him a pastry."

"Me too. I was thinking of taking him some chicken soup from the store."

"That premade stuff is gross and salty. I'll make him something fresh. Since he got sick from the owner of the bookstore she decided to close until she's better."

"Alright, you're a sweetheart."

They wrapped up the pastries and left.

"Too bad I have to work. I guess I'm going to have to wait until later to eat your chicken noodle soup."

"I'll make some garlic bread to go with it."

"Do you want me to leave you my key in case Adam is asleep when you go by? I can drop it off after I get dressed."

"Okay. I'm going to go down the market and then I'll be back. I'm sure I'll only be gone for half an hour."

"Enough time for me. See you in a bit."

Ann went inside the apartment building while Avery kept walking. She bought everything she needed for the soup and walked back.

She was changing when Ann arrived to drop off the key. She gave her a wave and grabbed the bag with groceries.

When she got to their apartment she knocked first. When no one answered she got in. She could hear Adam snoring in his room and held in her giggle. Poor guy was probably tired and he didn't need to be woken up by her.

She started on the soup. Cooking had a calming effect on her and she loved to do it. Especially if it was for a friend who needed it.

While she let it simmer she turned on the television on low and left it on the cooking show they all watched.

She loved watching it and memorizing the recipes. They would help whenever she got married. She would love to greet Ethan with a nice warm dinner every night.

That was of course after working all day in her mother's restaurant. She could also open her own bakery once she became a pastry chef.

That sounded a lot better for her.

Adam's bedroom door opened and he came out shuffling in his bed cover.

"Hello, didn't expect to find you here."

"Hey. How are you feeling?"

"Horrible. I hate being sick."

"No one likes being sick. Sit down." She patted the seat of the couch.

He groaned and sat down. "So what have you been doing?"

"I made you some chicken soup."

"Really? Thanks I can't smell it but I'm sure the room is filled with it's goodness."

"It is and you'll love it. It's almost done. Do you want to watch something else on tv?"

"No, this is good."

"I was thinking of how I want to make these meals for Ethan. I'm already thinking of our future and we're not together." She sighed.

"You love him a lot."

"I do and I'm seriously thinking about transferring home. I love Paris but I miss home too much."

"I'm going to miss you."

"Ann talked about maybe checking out the city when she goes with me to the wedding. What if she decides to move there?"

"I don't know if I would follow her. Although it would be hard to be separated. I don't know, there's a lot to go over."

"She's only going to look but I know she loves Paris. I doubt she'll move to the my city." She stood up to check on the soup.

It was ready. She turned off the stove and served two bowls of it, letting them cool on the counter.

She bought store made dough and put it in the heated oven with garlic, olive oil and a little bit of shredded parmesan cheese.

"We'll eat and Ann can have some when she gets home. Are you taking any medicine?"

"Yes. I took some before I came out here."

"Do you want bread with your soup?"

"No, is it ready?"

"Yes."

He stood up and let the comforter on the couch. He sat down at the table as she served it there.

He blew on the first spoonful and tasted it.

"Mmm, this is good. How can you cook so delicious? You should marry me and not Ethan." Adam continued to spoon soup into his mouth.

"We would probably get divorced our first week married. We're completely different." She laughed.

"That's true. I'm glad to at least have you as a friend. Ann and I were lucky to find someone like you."

"Thanks. That means a lot."

They finished eating. The bread was cooked. Avery wrapped a few slices.

"Well I'm going to go."

"You don't have to. It's nice to have company."

"I want to call Ethan and see how he's doing. I don't think I can do that here."

"Oh, I get it. You want to have phone sex. I'll probably cramp your style."

She blushed. "That's not it at all."

He winked at her. "Sure. Go, if something serious happens to me I'll call you."

She nodded. "Do that, I'll answer your call. I'll come by to visit you tomorrow."

"Thank you for the soup."

"You're welcome."

He locked the door after her. She dialed Ethan's phone on the way to her apartment.

"Hey." Ethan sounded glad to hear her voice.

"Hi. What are you doing?"

"Having lunch with Katherine."

"I'm glad I caught you at lunch and not during class. Sometimes I forgot how many hours we're ahead here."

"What are you doing?"

"I'm going to my place. I was at Ann and Adam's. He's sick with the flu so I made him soup."

"I hope you make me soup when I'm sick." He chuckled. "I think I'm a little jealous."

"When are you not when it comes to Adam." Katherine spoke up on the phone.

"Hello Katherine."

"Hey, you sound great."

"You do too. I'm counting down the months until I get to see you."

"It might be sooner than you think. Delilah told me that she organized this spa treatment weekend for my bridal shower/party thing. It's next month. It's also supposed to be a birthday present from her."

"I think she mentioned something. Didn't know she had already reserved it. I'll call her to ask what dates and I'll definitely come down."

"Bring Ann with you. I'm sure she could use a relaxing weekend. We'll get to meet her too."

"I'll ask her."

"Okay, it's time for Avery and I to talk. She did call my phone." Ethan interupted.

"God, now you're jealous of me too?" Katherine teased him.

"Just wanted to hear your voice, well both your voices." Avery smiled.

"You mean his more than mine. I get it." She laughed.

"I can't wait to see you. It's been months." He turned the conversation back to Avery.

"One more month. I'm getting nervous for some reason."

"It's because you guys are going to talk about your future. At least I hope you are. You're not dating yet and you're not exactly just friends. I want to know what you are." Katherine broke in.

"I guess we won't have a private conversation." He sighed.

"I'll call you later or you call me."

"It's kind of hard for me to call at night. Send me a text when you go to sleep and we'll try to talk maybe tomorrow."

"We'll figure it out." Avery was already getting into her bed.

"Alright. Goodbye and take care."

"Goodbye Ethan and bye Katherine."

"Bye." Katherine chimed in at the end and then they hung up.

Everytime she talked to them, Avery missed them more. If she and Ethan got together now they would have to figure out some schedule to talk.

She sighed and closed her eyes. They would work it out somehow.
