Taught to kill that violence is the way

Ashes cold dark bleak as night

Knowing for who and what this price you pay

A flame grows forth burning ever bright

Leaving for a far distant land

Ashes cold dark bleak as night

For God, country freedom to take a stand

A flame grows forth burning ever bright

Gun raised to the head of a father driving with his son

Ashes cold dark bleak as night

Tossing candy to children as they play and run

A flame grows forth burning ever bright

Buddies blown to hell dead or with stumps in bloody sutures

Ashes cold dark bleak as night

Playgrounds built in hopes of happier futures

A flame grows forth burning ever bright

Stepping off a plane only wishing to trade places with those not returned

Ashes cold dark bleak as night

Empty dreams empty arms empty hearts all burned

Ashes cold dark bleak as night

Pieces of metal around my neck reminding it could be worse

A flame grows forth burning ever bright

A run, a smile, a kind deed lives on to dispel the curse

A flame grows forth burning ever bright

Memories of ghosts and images from the past

Ashes cold dark bleak as night

A new mission of love to give something to last

A flame grows forth burning ever bright
