Ghosting.

No one can ever understand how I can be two places at once, especially when they are thousands of miles apart. I can't understand it either. It's just something that I can do.

I can be here living my normal life, functioning like a relatively normal human being. Tasks can be carried out, even complicated ones that need a lot of concentration. I can talk to people just as easily as usual. Some things they say make total sense, others none at all. It's just another day of navigating my way through the communication jungle.

To all intents and purposes, and to all appearances, I am here getting on with my every-day life.

But at the same time a part of me is with you, at least when you want it to be. I have put aside a second self that always remains apart from this life. And no, I do not have schizophrenia. It IS me, the real me. The easiest way to describe it is that it is like a living ghost that stays in constant contact with the rest of me.

I guess in some ways it is pure selfishness on my part. If I find myself becoming too over-stressed I can tune in to this other me who is probably just loitering somewhere in the atmosphere. A couple of minutes there and the pressure can be reduced quite dramatically. It may be that by doing this I am averting a stroke or a breakdown. Perhaps I am on to something – a super-cure for modern life or a coping mechanism, at least.

Perhaps everyone should attempt to do the same thing, to split a small part of themselves off. If they don't have anyone special to send it to they could just let their other self drift and become a stress sanctuary to be called on in times of need.

But don't worry. My other self only visits you when you want it to. It is neither a spy nor a stalker; just a friend that you can call on for support when you are feeling down.Or even never if you choose. It has infinite patience and makes no judgements; the choice is always yours to make.
