What next? What do you think is going to be next? I can’t decide, I don’t want to decide, in fact, I don’t think I want to know. We’re supposed to be the “born-free” generation. “Born-free” of apartheid, but so many believe that the term means “Born-free” of responsibility, “Born-free” of morals, “Born-free” of manners and decency. Years ago there was a different generation. A generation of freedom fighters, people who lived to create a better life for others, fight for rights and give everything they had so that my generation could be “Born-free”. They created the world we have now with so many opportunities, yet what is this generation doing with it? They are striking instead of studying. They are lazing in the sun instead of working to show thanks to the freedom fighters. They are making a mockery of those who gave their everything as a gift to us. The freedom fighters were educated, they worked hard, they bought us freedom and we are closing all the doors they opened for us. Our parents had so little, yet they worked so hard, and we have their everything and we are choosing not to work, not to study, not to uplift ourselves. Where are these choices going to take us? What is the outcome for our country going to be when our parents and their knowledge is buried in the ground and we are no longer looked after by them? Us “Born-free”s are creating a world where the next generation will be “Born-Without”s because we are destroying their future with every opportunity we choose not to take.
