It was late afternoon, and the sun was slowly setting on the Amber family house. The mellow golden light colored the otherwise white walls, everything was quieter now that the noises of a busy day started to disappear and the chipping of the birds in the forested area surrounding the house overtook the sounds of engines passing on the road next to it. However, the somberness that was surrounding the house stood in contrast to the confusion in it. Thing and clothing were scattered all around the various rooms, as Mrs. Amber and Mr. Amber rushed to get ready for the dinner with a few friends whom they didn’t have a chance to talk to in months, and to be completely honest, forgot even existed until one of them got rich. Thanks to the money of this person the entire group reunited once again, like bees to a flower or, to use more suiting metaphor, likes flies to shit.
“Honey where is my tie?!” Mr. Amber panicked as they grew more and more late to the event.
“I have no idea, you probably left it in the washing machine again.”
“Kinds have you seen daddy’s tie?” Asked Mr. Amber again as he passed his two teen-aged kids in the living room.
“No, dad.” Sasha and Mike answered in unison.
“I guess I’m going without a tie then.”
“Hey! I am not responsible for your things! And hurry up we don’t want the other guys to sweet talk him before we arrive.” Pointed out Mrs. Amber with annoyance in her voice.
Mr. Amber grabbed his coat and left the house to start the car, while his wife stood at the door of the living room.
“Be good kids, clean this mess up before we return, you have pizza in the fridge for dinner if you get hungry, and please don’t burn the house down.” She warned Sasha and Mike and they nodded, their eyes fixed on the TV in front of them. They heard the door shut closed, and the sounds of the car engine fading away.

Night slowly fell upon the Amber family home. Sasha woke up on the couch, finding herself resting against Mike’s shoulder while he was still sleeping. The movie they were watching was long over, and she did not remember when either of them fell asleep. Her gaze wandered up to the clock on the wall. “11:25pm”.
She slowly stood up, careful not to wake Mike up. She was still tiered, the nap drained all of her energy away as it usually does. She could feel her mouth was dry, so she walked up to the fridge and downed a whole bottle of lemon juice. Sasha then stepped out of the house quietly, still afraid not to wake up her brother. The cool summer night air chilled her body from head to toe, and she suddenly felt the sleepiness go away. She looked up and saw a mosaic of stars staring back at her, their house was remote enough that the lights of the nearby town did not pollute the night sky and the empty void was constantly before their eyes.
As the young girl admired the beautiful sky above her, she was interrupted by a strange scratching noise from her right. She turned her head to see what it was, but could hardly make anything out from the darkness that enveloped their home. It sounded like a cat clawing on a piece of wood, but much softer, as if someone was to whisper that sound somehow, to hide it.
Sasha squinted at the darkness, trying to make out the animal that was doing that, but the starry skies just weren’t enough to lite her view. However, as her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she was able to barely make out a shape of a creature,
standing on four legs, like a wolf
but larger,
much larger,
a feral beast,
and then the light stabbed her eyes.
Mike was up and he turned on the light in the living room, which through the window illuminated the front porch, but the animal was gone, it didn’t leave it just wasn’t there when the light came. Mike waved at his sister to come in.
“Sasha what the fuck are you doing outside staring like a creep, I was scared shitless when I saw you through the window.”
“I heard something, and animal or something, never mind though it was probably nothing.” Sasha shrugged it off almost forgetting the silhouette she saw.
“Good, because we need to tidy up before mom and dad are done milking their friend for money!”
“Geez Mike calm down, we got this!” Sasha was a bit annoyed with her brother’s whining, she started to collect the haphazardly scattered clothing that Mr. and Mrs. left when they were getting ready.
“I’ll go clean my stuff up in my room.” Mike said walking up the long staircase.
After a while Sasha was done cleaning the living room, she packed most of the things into drawers but left a pile of dirty cloths on the couch to put in the laundry room later. She moved on to the kitchen, as she was washing the dishes at the sink, she heard a tapping coming from the living room behind her. Sasha turned off the water and listened carefully, it was too loud for her to have imagined it.
It came again, three knock, as if someone was knocking on glass,
“Tap,tap,tap..” and again, and again.
Each time the knocking was faster and faster.
Sasha felt a sudden feeling of dread overcome her body, as she imagined a stranger tapping at their window in the middle of the night.
-It’s so late, what could he want? We are so far away from any other houses, strangers rarely wander here even during the day, what if he’s a thief, or a murderer?- Sasha thought, her thoughts muffling the now constant knocking in the background.
One moment later, the knocking stopped.
And again silence fell upon the Amber family home.
Sasha was still paralyzed with fear, she wanted to shout for Mike, but what good would that do if the stranger heard her.
She slowly walked into the living room and, nothing, nobody was there, everything was just as she left it. The doors and windows were closed, and there were no signs anyone was there. She slowly walked around the room, fear still strong in her heart. Rushing through the room, she quickly covered the windows with blinds, and as she covered the last windows she felt a bit of comfort again. Now feeling a bit safer she called for her brother.
“Mike! Can you come down here?”
Mike descended down the stairs quickly as he recognized the distress in his little sister’s voice.
“Hey, is everything alright? I was just done cleaning upstairs.”
“I think somebody might be outside.” Sasha whispered to her brother, still fearfully trying to peek behind the blinds on the windows to see if anyone was there.
“You know people don’t come here in weeks unless they need something.”
“I know, but I heard someone tapping on our windows.”
“You know, when you were little you used to be afraid of monsters under the bed, you were always the wimpy one.” Mike shrugged it off as his sister’s imagination. Nobody could blame him for this, since Sasha was known to be afraid of demons and ghosts as a kid, and even now she gets so afraid of horror movies she doesn’t sleep for days. Mike though this was just another of her episodes, what were the chances that a stranger wandered all the way to their house on foot in the darkness, it would take him at least three hours to reach their home from the nearest town.
But just as Mike was to dismiss Sasha’s claims as paranoia, the tapping came again, this time from the door.
“Tap,tap,tap..” a few seconds of pause before each set of taps.
Sasha gasped quietly as her heart started beating faster, each tap made her more anxious, she jumped back from the front door and hid behind her big brother. Mike himself was scared, what if Sasha wasn’t paranoid, what if some trespasser was toying with his little sister?
He rushed to the kitchen and took a large carving knife,  he slowly approached the door, knife in hand, as the tapping grew louder and louder. Behind him his little sister hid, as if expecting a monster to jump at her at any moment, her heartbeat fast and breathing shallow, each step closer to the taping seemed like an eternity for her.
Mike clenched the knife in his hand, ready to pounce at the stranger frightening her sister. He reached out to the door, and as his fingers made contact with the wooden surface, the tapping was cut short on the second tap.
They both stood there, unmoving.
-Has the stranger left?- Mike asked himself as his hand moved down to the doorknob.
He jerked the room open, prepared to defend his sister if anyone tried to jump him,
but the only thing he saw before him was darkness.
Not even the light from inside the house would shine outside, as If it too was afraid to venture beyond the comfort of the home. Mike slowly stepped out into the front yard, Sasha stayed behind, taking a few steps back into the house, her skin was still crawling with the feeling of being watched.
“Mike, come back, it’s gone.” Sasha whispered, as if she knew it was listening.
And just as Mike turned to look around the yard, the door swung shut, the boom echoed through the house as Sasha jumped back and let out a scream of terror.
It took her a moment to figure out was had happened.
“Mike! Mike!” She called for her brother once the shocked had passed.
But no answer came.
Sasha slowly crept to the door, and opened them again, just to find no trace of her brother.
In fear for his life, Sasha ran outside, her own safety now her least concern.
“Mike! Where are you, Mike!” She called again, her voiced echoed among the trees in the wilderness surrounding the house.
Again, nothing.
Suddenly she heard a boom again, as the door behind her shut closed once more.
She rushed to it trying to open it but it was locked. With all her strength she pushed the door as she tried to break in but with no merit.
Sasha remembered the monsters she feared as a child, the little scared girl in her again was awakened.
In that moment she could hear the scratching she heard before, this time right behind her, and much closer than she would like to think.
Slowly she turned her head around to face the noise, and was met with the dark animal she saw before, only this time much closer to her.
Still the light was dim, and she couldn’t make out any details, but the creature appeared like a wolf, only much larger,
with a boney body, as if it was starving for weeks,
It’s appearance almost indescribable, no features,
only a black void, like a shadow.
The thing that most terrified Sasha was it’s long, slender legs, four of them branching into five slender, human-like fingers.
Whatever the creature was it was no animal, but it was hungry.
Sasha screamed, fear now paralyzing her body, unable to move, unable to even close her eyes to protect her mind against the horror she faced.
The creature crept closer, each step it took towards Sasha made her mind go blanker, as if it was being washed away by pure fear.
It reached out, It’s long arms enveloped Sasha like a cloud, soon she couldn’t even scream.
And once face to face with the creature, she couldn’t even think, she grew limb as she saw a gaping hole resembling a mouth open on it’s face.
In a moment, Sasha was gone.
And again, darkness fell upon the Ambler family home.
