Smoked
Robert Kasch

I watched the tips of my fingers as they turned grey and then a dark brown. Watching the weird transformation I was reminded of a slow burning cigarette left forgotten in an ashtray while it’s smoke floats around the room.
Blackened flesh fell away from bone. I looked down to watch my chest burst into flames revealing ribs that quickly browned and burned. There was no pain. My eyes gone; hollow sockets replaced them.
Mostly ash I had to try to sleep. Small bits of charred bone disturbed me until a swirl of gears began to move me to a square steel door where two men waited. They were joking about a woman in the waiting room. Seems she couldn’t decide on an urn for her husband.
