Exploring the Hills

for JD (a riff on E. A. Robinson's House on the Hill)

My friend went away

leaving my life quiet and sad.

There is nothing more to say.

Though gray, she was so gay

she was child-like and always flannel-clad.

My friend went away.

Now there is never a day

I don't miss the friendship we had.

There is nothing more to say.

In my mind she and I still stray

around the city's hills on bikes, glad.

My friend went away

but oh did we play!

The blues and rock and trad.

There is nothing more to say.

Just one more thing about the way

she filled this silence that is driving me mad!

My friend went away,

There is nothing more to say.
