It wasn’t until a whole month later when I finally discovered exactly who that anonymous donor was. At that stage I had finally given up trying to find this person. Several times I had gone back to the Office to demand they give me some information on him but every time I tried, they’d give me the same dull answer, “I’m sorry but we don’t have that kind of information. This person specifically requested to remain anonymous.”. All I had really accomplished was waste my time and theirs. So I had finally decided to give up and thanked whoever this person was for looking out for me. I don’t like how they went behind my back but I had to admit, they really helped me out. I had the money to pay them back but I was starting to lose hope that I was going to find them and pay them back.

By the end of November, exams were becoming the main focus for most of the students so the library and any free space around the campus was continuously occupied by stressed out students. Exams started in two weeks and I had parked myself in the library from the early hours of the mornings until library closing time with all the other stressed out individuals. That Tuesday evening, I bumped into Matt for the first time in a month. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to meet him at all because I didn’t have any more business with him. I was sat down on one of the couch chairs that the café below the library had when we made eye contact. Damn this eye contact. I gave him a small smile to suggest that I acknowledged his presence but I didn’t want him to come over and make conversation with me. I just wanted to be left alone while I drank my tea in peace. But of course, he comes over to me. “Hey”, I gave him another small smile. I didn’t want to seem too friendly in case he decides on his own that I wanted some company. “I want to apologise for not being present at the Office a month ago. I had something else come up so I had to take the day off work”, he jumped right into the apology. I was taken aback by his apology because it’s not like he owed me anything. “Oh no, it’s alright! Some Michael guy was able to sort it out for me”, I quickly responded. He looked serious for a second with a soft expression returning on his face as soon as he saw me wrinkle my eyebrows at his reaction. “Where you able to pay the rest of the fine okay?”, his words kinder than his expression a second ago. “Oh yes, I managed to pay it al—”, I stop dead in my track. “Wait a minute, how did you know that I was there to pay the rest of my fine and not the first instalment?”, did people around the Office look at everybody’s file? Was that even legal? “I was the anonymous person who paid the first instalment for you”, he confessed. He didn’t even try to hide it or make up an excuse. “But why?”, I was speechless more so than angry. Why would someone I barely knew do that? “It was a way of saying thank you. The boy that was getting bullied that morning was my little brother, Tobey. He’s always getting into trouble for fighting with other people because he’s bullied so much. He fights back to stick up for himself but there’s been countless times that he’s gotten hurt and had to miss a couple of days of school because if it. When he came home crying about these five bullies and a lady trying to fight them all on her own, I quickly ran to where he told me you were. When I finally arrived you had already cornered the kid with an ice blade and threatened them if they didn’t leave you alone. It was impressive to say the least. When I was told to follow up on a person who was caught fighting the same morning that Tobey was rescued, I knew it had to be you. So I did what any decent person would do and paid off what I could. It’s not much but that’s all I could afford. Working part time as a student is as bad as it sounds but I was happy to do it for you. Especially after what you did for Tobey”. He explained.  I wasn’t sure how to respond to that. “Well that’s alright, I just did what any decent person would have done so I don’t need your money. It was my choice to help him and I knew the consequences when I volunteered to help him. I have the money on me now so please accept it”, I told him with a straight face. I didn’t need anybody to bail me out. I took the money from my purse and put it on the table that was separating us. He looked at the money and pushed it back towards me. “Just let me do this for my little brother. If I wasn’t for you, I would have ended up paying far more than €150 euro so please accept it”. I wasn’t going to back down. I looked him straight in the eye. I took the money from the table, grabbed his left hand and thrust it into his palm. “No. I refuse to take a stranger’s money so please just take it. I can do this all day”. My hand still gripping his, he sighed and gave me a small smile. “Fine, I’ll take it. But I’m still very grateful for what you did for Tobey”. I smile a genuine smile this time and took my hand away from his. “I know you are. And you’re very welcome. I’m glad he’s okay. Also sorry for touching you without your permission like that. It didn’t seem like you were going to back down any time soon so I had to resort to my guns”, I joke as I flex my arms. He softly laughed and finally put the money into his wallet.
