Shoes

 

 

blue blue blue

they chanted

 

wear us, take us

with you

 

she passed naked

from open door

 

through mist now

dissipating

 

crossed to dresser

half-slip

 

choose choose choose

us they whispered

 

from the depths

on the floor

 

to the clasp

of her bra

 

the youngest appeared

as she powdered

 

wire-held breasts, after eleven

births, surely her feet were swollen

 

soothe soothe

we soothe

 

then the dress

fragrance at the wrist

 

unhanging, arms,

back, slipping into

 

navy linen

zip me up

 

ooh ooh ooh

they sighed, anticipating

 

stockinged toes while

the little one cried, clinging

 

look, she said, look

at my nice blue shoes

 

delighted, lifted
