It's easy to look back and see mistakes, but is it really as clear-cut as it seems.

A Game Of ‘If’

There’s a game we like to play

A game that has no rules;

‘What if’ and ‘If only’

Will play us all for fools.

So many things that I have done,

Decisions I have made,

I call them in to question,

An irrational cascade.

Each time I have to make a choice

An option has been killed

Even when the consequence

Does not leave me thrilled.

The path, it has been blocked off,

I have shut the door

On what might have been the outcome

But now can be no more.

When looking back there really are

So many things I’d change

But each tiny adaptation

Would my whole life rearrange.

What would have made it better?

What would have made it worse?

Giving in to hindsight

Is really such a curse.

I can never really say

‘That would’ve been for the best’

One thing might have been improved

But what about the rest.

So I’m going to try not wondering

Put it in the past

And get on with the acting out

The role that I’ve been cast.
