It was December 2014, every one of us was busy packing our bags to travel to our respective hometowns after completing a hectic and the most difficult schedule of 5 Th semester engineering exams. Amidst packing their bags, everybody in the hostel were discussing about their fate in the recently concluded Digital Signal processing(DSP) paper. Though me , Praveen and Prem were from CSE , we had an occasional electronics papers. One of those papers was DSP. To be very frank, we did not worry about DSP Since it’s been a known fact that we would hardly get twenty marks. Might be twenty one marks but definitely nor more than that. In the midst of those noisy DSP discussions, we had an other discussion. We were planning to spend the vacation together. There were some six odd plans initiated but eventually rejected by Praveen who used to be highly sceptical and convincing him would be a bigger task than getting passed in the DSP. You should not do so much of arguments with him Because he knew boxing. Finally, Prem came up with an excellent idea of taking us to his village. Since me and Praveen was not from rural areas, we wanted to explore it. We booked tickets in bus since train facility was not available to Theni. We boarded at 9.30 pm in Koyambedu, Chennai. We spoke some cricket, some politics and a pinch of cinema. We reached Theni by 6.00 am and from there we had to get bus to reach Prem's village. Trust me, we had not seen that much greenery in our lives which we saw while travelling for a brief 15 minutes in that bus. We got down in a place where I could see a naming plate stating "Surulipatti" would be in 2 kilometres distance. I politely asked Prem " Do we really need to walk 2 kilometres" . He replied " I am afraid, we should" . We started to walk and I started thinking about Prem. Prem was a kind of guy who chose to live simpler despite having so much of wealth and assets. Prem's father Muthuvel was a chairman in that village who was highly respected by the people living there. While walking, we saw a strange building with faded paints and broken walls. It was really haunting. As I said Praveen was different, He started questioning Prem about that building. Prem said " It has been like this since I was born. It has been told that a girl was brutally raped and murdered in that place and her soul is still wandering around that building. The man Ramasamy who raped her was found dead there. Since then, nobody was dare enough to visit there. So guys no experiments please!!! Especially for you Praveen ". Praveen said " We won't go there buddy". I did not know the honesty level of Praveen's statement but for me, I could rather watch Conjuring movie alone than going to this building. We finally reached Prem's house. It was not a house but a palace. It would take literally half a day to see everything in that house. Then there was a man who was approaching towards us with a white shirt and a white dhoti. He was dark, six feet tall and had an unprecedented manly appeal.I had no wonder why people respect him so much and yes, he is Muthuvel, the most respected chairman of Surulipatti, For me, It was respect at first sight. Prem introduced us to his father. He used to call his father as " Ayya" and it sounded nice. A group of people was waiting for Muthuvel. He asked everyone " did you eat? ". Everyone unanimously said yes. Two men were standing aside when everyone were sitting. I guessed those two would be the topic of the upcoming debate. One man in the group said " Ayya!! as we all know, our village is known for its strict discipline .we have been awarded and appreciated by our state government for being an alcohol free village.Recently, Some adverse things are happening which is a disgrace for us. Yes, two of our men were found drunk yesterday and caused nuisance in the village. If it leaks to our neighbour village, Our name will be spoilt. More than that, it is really bad to see your efforts of changing this village into a better one is going in vain. Muthuvel Said " whatever has to happen will happen. There is no point in punishing them. Once they become normal , they will understand the situation. I hope they will not spoil our village's name." On hearing this, those two men started crying by holding Muthuvel's leg. How could a man be this much calm when his prestige was going down. He is amazing. Amidst these conversation me and Praveen had something to worry about. Praveen murmured in Prem's ear " Seriously, No alcohol " Prem said " Yes, no cigarettes too" Praveen said " See Prem, Temperature here seems to be freezing. It is hard to survive here without these stuffs" Prem said " Machan I did survive here. I have been living here for the past 20 years. So please go to sleep " I said " Don't do this to us Prem" Prem said " go to sleep". It was around 9.30 pm. We had other ideas ,when everyone started to sleep. We had just 30 minutes to find a tasmac and most importantly we could not ask the villagers about the shop. So we just walked towards the bus stop in where we got down. It was completely dark as we could not see each others face clearly. When we crossed that haunted building, Praveen stopped me and said " Machan! shall we go inside the building" I was literally fainted by his decision and asked him the reason. He said " M achan! We can get alcohol even in Chennai. In the streets, Near the temple and even in front of our college, But We can't get the experience of exploring a ghost house. What do you say?" I said " What! What! It's a matter of our lives. Don't be so courageous Praveen and above all we did a promise to Prem. Do you remember that? ". Praveen said " Promises are meant to be broken. You are coming with me. DOT " I wanted to stop him but ended up in following him on remembering the fact that he knew boxing. I left my mobile phone in the house. We used Praveen's mobile to have some light. We just approached the house slowly. I literally died in fear. Praveen opened the door slowly. The sound which door made while opening was also frightening. We slowly walked inside the house. It was dark and fearful. Only good thing we had was the mobile phone But the bad thing was it had only 3% of battery. The phone got switched off. Everything went dark as we could not see each others face clearly. Something got hit in my leg, I screamed in fear. Praveen touched that one and said " It is a drum. Let's open it" We opened it and it had a strange liquid. Praveen tasted it and said " Alcohol". He added " It is pretty fresh. I am having a gut feeling that this building does have lamps and electricity. So search for the main switch. Hurry up machan." I just ran through each and every corner of the house and eventually found the switch. I said " Praveen I got it but I don't know how to do this." He said " Just pull the gear down da" I did it and the lights came. Then, What we saw was unbelievable. I took a while to realise that we were seeing 12 drums of liquor in this disciplined village. Suddenly, We heard the door opening sound. We ran outside of the house through the back entrance. We hid in the bush. We could see two men through the window. They were talking about something and one of them left after switching off the main switch. So it became dark. Praveen said " There is only one in the house and we are two. We can beat him and ask what is happening" I said " Why should we? .It is none of our business " . Praveen said " We should do this for Prem's father. How can we let this happen to him. We should find what is happening." We approached the house slowly. Praveen knocked the front door and I came from the rear door. When that man opened the door, Praveen smashed him on the face. Trust me, Mike Tyson would have become so proud if he had seen that punch. That was one hell of a punch. He fell down and I caught him. We asked about this alcohol drums. Initially he refused to open the mouth but eventually opened the mouth after receiving three more punches from Praveen. He said in fear " This is the place where we use to make alcohol illegally and we supply it to the nearby villages and districts." After a brief silence,I said " We are not going to hand over you to Muthuvel, If we do, he will forgive you. We don't want this to happen. We want to kill you. " Praveen took some alcohol from the drum and poured on him. Praveen lit the match stick. That guy screamed in fear. Our intention was not to kill him but we just wanted to know the entire story. He opened his mouth and said " Muthuvel! Muthuvel! . He asked us to do this. He made this village alcohol free just to create an image to police that this village does not make alcohol. We made this place as a ghost house and the rapped girl, is a story" We stood stunned in silence for 2 minutes. Praveen asked " What about Ramasamy?. Is he also a story " That man said " No, he is not a story. He was the one who found out what is happening here. Muthuvel murdered him and created a story of the rapped girl. Muthuvel is the largest supplier of alcohol in this district. He is just acting." We had a bigger task to decide what to do with this problem. Because, More than being a cold blooded murderer, he was our friend's father. We decided to hand over this man to villagers. He told everything to the villagers. Muthuvel had been arrested and put behind the bar. We left that place without talking anything to Prem. We never talked thereafter. Still I don't know what we did was correct or not. But one thing i want to say, Unlike the portrayal of friendship in cinema, We haven't had the happy ending. We are eagerly waiting to be together once again...
