‘Get in the fucking front seat’, I throw my schoolbag on the back seat and slam the door. I get in the car next to him. He is crying although he isn’t sad, he is fuming. I stay quiet for a few minutes, he begins to grow annoyed in both my presence and lack of sympathy. ‘I’m going to tell you something and if you still fucking hate me then I am done with you, I will throw the rest of your stuff out, I will stop paying for your fucking school fees and I will never speak to you again.’ I pretended I wasn’t in the car with him and I think about normal kids whose normal parents ask how their day was and give them a special after school treat, maybe a cake or slice. I can’t help but wish my life was like theirs, I can’t help but cry. ‘Your mother has been cheating on me with another guy, Nate…’, he continues on giving intricate details about my mothers extracurriculars. He pulls his phone out, doing his best to keep one of his bloodshot eyes, on the road, his tears streaming down his face. He proceeds to show me screenshots of conversations between my mother and another man, not Nate, the contact read Steve. There are pictures too, my mother in her cheap bikini, she sent that to him. I cannot believe my eyes, I feel like I might have a breakdown right now, my head is spinning. I did not know who this man Nate was but my dad doesn’t hold back he tells me that my mum had been leaving work early to see him, never explicitly saying that he actually fucked her. I begin remembering all the Sundays when my mum used to just go out without a word said and not return for hours, now I realise she was probably with Nate or Steve. With every word that rolls out of my dads mouth I feel that I am learning more and more about the fucking crazy world that I live in. ‘Nate is married, he has a son about your age, he tried to commit suicide.’. ‘Let me out’, I cry, I am furious at my mum but at the same time I cannot believe how my dad is just telling me this like he is asking me to eat my vegetables or take out the rubbish. He doesn’t reply, instead continues on, ‘The four of us met, we sat around and decided that none of us would speak again.’. I find this almost amusing, the four of them probably thought they were being so rational and mature. Ironic.
