The Great Ruiner By: Michael Wilson During the inauguration of the 18th century, philosophers were discovering their ideals and the scientific methods of enlightenment. A new era with the world consumed by a new war and the separation between philosophy and religion, the rich and the poor created a significant and unsettling human mentality. As war flooded the east and the divided in the west the south had almost seemed forgotten by mankind. The majority of the south was a population of poor but very hard working community that would always struggle with mass illness and disease. the uncertainty of even being able to eat or provide for them or their family. Dispite the constant fear that overwhelmed the south, there is a town even more hidden and forgotten, a town where the people were aware and excepted the hell that they were forced to endure. This small community insisted on helping others realizing that the only way to survive was in numbers, it almost seemed as this small town of caring people did not know the current struggle around them. With everyone pitching in their share of work and help the town did lack people of education, the town was mostly trade workers varying from farmers Carpenter's and other various skill trades. With no teachers or doctors everyone is required to pitch in their fair share of the work, even when the children reach of 6 they are taught a skill that will impact them into the small community. On the outskirts of the small town confides a very peaceful and humble gentleman of the name Mathew, Mathew only being in his early twenty's was an abandoned orphin at a very young age , when Mathew was just a little boy he stumbled upon the small town only a few miles away where the community took him in as he was one of their own, he was taught the skill trade of leather working and was an immediate impact to the town as he developed quickly into a journeyman. Mathew was forever grateful to a community that had so very little but gave him so much, even though Mathew was welcomed in open arms he was very addiment about remaining in the shack that he has known his whole life. The shack unfortunately was very brittle, dirty and looked as if it could have been blown away with a small gust of wind, Mathew only did minor repairs as he spent more time with becoming a more skillful leather worker or chipping in to the community as he would play with the the children or just to help anyone in need. On one very early morning Mathew rises at of his Ned as the sun shines in bright morning light through the brittled cracked walls and Mathew releases a long youn as he begins to step outside and embrace the warm comforting morning and prepares for a new enlighten day. Before matjrew gets dressed he dips his face in a bowl of water to quickly clean himself off, as Mathew grabs his pack of supply's and tools he begins his walk to the small town he admires so much and as he starts to anticipate the view of smiles and warmth of the community Mathew begins to walk faster as he becomes so eager spend time with people that that truly care for him. After a lengthy walk through warm and bright morning Mathew finally arrives at the small town, "Mathew, Mathew" a young boy yells from a distance, as Mathew steps into the town the children drop what they were doing just to say hi to Mathew. The presence of Mathew immediately provides a sense of comfort, stability and most importantly hope, those were quality's that has lacked and become a distant memory nforbthe the people of this humble and grateful community. Mathew embraces the affection of the children with a plush smile and a glow in his eyes, as he passes out the bread and apples for the children he visits a market of tools so he can finish his his work and provide it as a gift to the town. When he enters the market he realizes the local trade man is not present, he looks around with a confused look he hears a calm female voice behind him " Adam is not longer with is" the female says, " well what happened?, will he come back?" Asks Mathew. This is a women Mathew has never seen before dressed in a dark Gray dress with black boots and hair the mostly resembled a spiders web, " Your not listening Matthew, he's no longer with us" she repeated. Mathew becomes a bit curious to why a mysterious women knows his name and that he has no recollection of her. He hears a creak in the old wooden floor a sound very familiar to a footstep. Mathew turns his head for a brief moment and when he looks back the mysterious woman has disappeared, puzzled and confused Mathew takes a moment to catch his breathe. Unsettled to the core of his gut Mathew trys to dismiss what happened by convincing himself it was just an odd coincidence, he leaves the vacant market with a pail look on his face as he has just seen a ghost, he looks around the community to try to get a grip on reality but the more he looks the more everything looks " normal" the kids are playing and the parents continue on with their chores as nothing seems to be misplaced. For a brief moment Mathew feels invisible as if he was on the outside looking in or entered a temporary dre sequence, a bit shaken and still confused Mathew begins to walk slow leaving the town. As he fallows the dirt road home to his crumbling shack he notices a black scorpion crawl up his leg rather quickly Mathew panics and stands still in fear, the scorpion makes his way to his chest and stops as it seems as it's staring at Mathew, after a few seconds the scorpion falls off of Mathews chest to the ground the scorpion curls up and does not move. Mathew kneels down to look at the immobile scorpion to see that it as died suddenly, his unsettling nerves begin to grow into an overwhelming amount of fear as he lifts himself back up and starts to walk back home like a Coward animal afraid of being someone or something prey. He finally reaches his home as he felt the walk was a lot longer than normal, he places his bag on the table and removes his shoes and places them under the bed and as he sits sits down Mathew notices a very foul odor, an ododr similar to the stench of rotting meat and burning flesh, he again feels very uncomfortable as he his being watched by an unknown presence. Mathew stands up quickly as he begins to become frustrated and slams open his door to find that there is nothing but dirt, he no longer smells the horrible odor until he returns back inside and to be overwhelmed once again by an unsettling and uncomfortable feeling. The temperature begins to drop quickly and a sudden chill consumes Mathew and affecting him psychology giving him environment of pain and suffering, he starts to rub his finger tips on his cold palms as he had false anticipation as his for head begins to sweat even though his body as become increasingly cold. Mathew cannot bare the questionable and uncomfortable feeling so he lays his back on the bed and crosses his arms hoping the feeling will eventually leave his body and his mind, continuing to lay down he let's the feeling take over as he is completely mentally and emotionally exhausted he starts to hear voices as someone was having a conversation but he could not make out what the voices were saying. Mathew drifts away into his subconscious trying to disregard the presence around him but has terrifying dreams that are just images of mutilation, suffering and despair. He awakens to a cold sweat and a painful ache that surrounds his body, with no light that usually shines through the cracks of his brittle home he seems to have no track of time or knowing how long he has actually slept. Mathew rises from his bed slowly and trys to put himself back together, when he opens his door he sees no sun but a dark Greg of overcast fills the sky as what may seems as if a storm is brewing over him, he goes back inside to wash his face to realize that the bowl of water has been replaced by poisonous spiders. Surprised and disgusted Mathew jumps back in a panic but he takes a deep breathe grabs the bowl and throws it outside, anxious to head to the town for answers he quickly puts on his shoes leaving his bag of supplies behind he leaves the worn down shack in a hurry and sets his destination to the the town. Still very tired and weak Mathew forces himself to pick up the pace as his feet drag through the cold dirt he can sense something is wrong as it seems to quiet and the sky overwhelms the area in darkness, but as Mathew can finally see the town in a distance it feels mildly relieved as he assumes he can discover what is going on. He takes his first step into the town but does not see nor hear children play or yell his name in excitement, he sees no one working or continuing their daily chores, Mathew sees no one, the town has become vacant like a ghost town and all he hears is the wind whispering beneath his feet. He continues to slowly walk around the empty town still dragging his feet he comes upon a snake that rises above the dirt only to let loose one last hiss before it dies right in front of Mathew. The wind pauses for a brief moment and Mathew hears a female voice whisper his name but as he turns around he sees nothing as the wind picks up once again making any whisper unable to be heard. He begins to walk aimlessly no longer able to focus or think clearly, clouding his judgment and personal state of mind Mathew has become mentally lost. The clouds get darker and thunder begins to roar causing violent tremors through the ground, Mathew stills walks without a destination as suddenly he believes there is something behind him. Hesitant to turn around he slowly turns his body to see a shadowed man near a empty building, his heart rate begins to clime and feels an urge to rush the shadowed man, only a few feet away Mathew blinks and the figure is gone. Stoping in his tracks Mathew looks around and yells " WHAT ARE YOU? ". The familiar stench of a rotting corpse once again creeps upon Mathew and begins to fill the air with the horrible odor, Mathew feels the chill start to surround his body as the sky almost becomes completely black. He feels a unknown presence among him and this time refuses to turn around as he knows someone or something is behind him, Mathew begins to say a broken prayer as he feels not may be his last words. " Your time has come" a deep dark whisper Seels from behind Mathew as he stands completely still in utter fear, Mathew sheds one slow tear and as it runs down his face he closes his eyes, the shadowed figure begins to grow in size and its hands makes the shape of a dark blade. Mathews only tear hits the ground and has the last sign of faith disappears the shadowed figured puts the blade through his back and his heart, Mathew gasps from the pain knowing his time has come to an end, as the shadowed figure removes the blade Mathew hits the ground and all he can see is the silowet of a disfigured man covered in darkness.
