A Different Kind Of Stranger

I just could never see the point of new years. To me it was just another excuse for people to get drunk, party and stay up all night. However, none of my friends saw it that way which is how I wound up in an extremely crowded Times Square on New Year's Eve. I was sitting on a bench off to the side clutching a hot coffee that was steaming in the fridge night's air and reading a book. I couldn't believe I had let my friends drag me there. I watched the crowd  of people yelling at each other so that they could be heard over the other hundred yelling voices. Then the countdown began.

"Five… Four… Three…" shouted the crowd. I covered my ears in anticipation of what was to come. "Two… One! HAPPY NEW YEAR!" The crowd erupted. Some started screaming their resolutions for the year and others started guzzling more booze. But many turned to the first person they saw and kissed them. This had all grown too much for me and I closed my book and began the long trek back to the car. On my way back a young women stepped into my path, staggering with intoxication. She groped at my collar and stood still for a second before firmly planting her lips on mine. I was frozen with shock, unable to do anything. Still holding my collar, she took a step back. She looked me in the eye and gave me a drunken grin. The grin slowly faded into a grimace. Then, before I had any time to do something she threw up all down my front.
