Tried And Tested

I tried to put you from my mind,

I tried to turn away,

I tried to become an island

Where no one else held sway.

I thought I’d built up barricades,

I thought I’d put up fences,

I thought the walls that I had built

Would be enough defences.

I’d turned my back upon deceit,

I’d turned my back on lies,

I’d turned my back on trusting

So please don’t criticize.

I told my heart it’s made of stone,

I told my hear it’s cold,

I told my heart to be impervious

To any lies it’s told.

But you tested my defences,

You tested my resolve,

You tested my resilience

To never get involved.

So now that I have trusted you,

So now that you’re my friend,

So now that you have breached that wall

Don’t let this friendship end.
