“So how did this book happen?” I asked waiting for the story to start.

“Back in 1802 Derek was 18 and Cassandra and I were 17. We were growing up in a small village near London. Our families were the richest and most influential families in the village. The balls that our families threw were always a hit.” Lacey said her eyes looking far away as she was reminiscing on life before. “Although Derek and I were known by different names back then. He was Liam Townsend and I was Larissa Morganstein. Our lives used to be all but perfect. Cassandra and I were best friends but we hadn’t met Derek until the day of a party Cassandras father was throwing at their villa.” As Lacey was telling the story I could tell that talking about Cassandra and the past was bringing some unpleasant memories, but she kept talking anyway.

“Cassandra and I were getting ready for the party when she told me about the mysterious stranger she had met in the market that afternoon. She was so excited about the possibility of seeing this stranger again that it was all she could talk about, even when she was getting her corset put on which says something. She was enthralled with the possibility of seeing him again that she became oddly confident, she was always the mousey type, especially when it came to men. But when it came time for the party her confidence was waning and she was trying hard to stay in the corners. I was having none of that, so every chance I got I brought her back to the dance floor and tried to get her to dance with me or with anybody. I always found those parties horridly boring but I did get some enjoyment out of it at Cassandra’s expense.” Lacey started smiling at her own memories, which in turn made me smile a little.

“I appreciate the backstory but can we cut to the chase?” I asked getting a little impatient, although I have to admit I am enjoying this story a little.

“Oh hush. I am getting to the point, but I need to tell you how it started. So shall I continue?” She asked. Instead of saying anything I just nodded. “Fantastic. So anyway, while I was trying to parade Cassandra around she was doing everything to try and hide. But when she was standing watching her sister dance with her suitor Nicholas and then Derek came up behind her and started talking to her. I quietly slipped away, but was watching her from afar. Her and Derek started to dance and she was doing some shameless and flirtatious giggling so I knew it was going well. And then they slipped away and I knew it must have been going very well. After that night, they became an item and Cassandra had started to become different. In some good ways but also in some very scary ways.

“Our village was starting to become infected with the Spanish influenza. The doctors back then couldn’t find a way to treat it so most of our village was dying and nobody could stop it from spreading. My parents and little brother had perished from the virus early, so I went to live with Cassandra. Cassandra had started to become different throughout the time of the virus, I thought at first she was getting sick but she had been experimenting with magic, and not just the run of the mill white magic. She was experimenting with dark magic. She hadn’t been too keen on showing me the spells that she was experimenting with but she had told me that it was taking her over, but she couldn’t stop it. But when the influenza hit Derek’s villa I thought she was going to lose her mind, she was filled with more worry than I had ever seen. Derek’s parents had died as did his 2 older brothers and younger sister, so Derek was left alone. Derek and I both being absolutely alone didn’t want to die from the same thing as our families did so we started to search for alternatives.” Lacey stopped for a second after seeing my jaw starting to drop. This was crazy information overload. But only after a minute of silence did she continue with her story.

“Cassandra’s family was one of the last families affected by the virus that had spread through our village like wildfire. Derek and I had branched out to a village away for a couple of days searching for a way to save our village if possible. That’s when we found a group of strangers who called themselves “The Five”. This group was a group who had said they could give us the gift of eternal health. It didn’t register to us what that meant until we stayed with them for the night and watched what they did. They fed on some of the humans in their own village, drinking their blood and leaving them for dead in the streets. We were horrified at first, but seeing the way they moved and the power they had, and that kind of power was very seductive. We became vampires that night. The process was agonizing. The emotions that became heightened drove us to the point of madness. Slowly but surely we completed our transition, but with completing our transition came our first kills. My guilt had overpowered the euphoria I should have been feeling, I cried for hours after the kill but Derek seemed the thrive. His transition was easier than mine, he also took to being a vampire quicker than I did. We had to learn that we could only walk around in the nighttime hours, daylight was like acid on our skin as it burned us and if we stayed in it too long we would burst into flames.”

“Okay but wait a minute. What does all this have to do with Cassandra? She was dabbling with dark magic; I understand that but how does all this tie in with the book that she created?” I asked. This story was like a gripping novel, it grabbed me up and wouldn’t let me go.

“I was getting there. Stop interrupting me or I’ll duct tape your mouth shut.” Lacey said giving me a wink letting me know she wasn’t serious. At least not fully.

“Alright fine. Continue.”

“Oh you’re so kind, thank you. Now as I was saying. Derek took to being a vampire much quicker than I did. But quicker than anything he was ready to go home. He wanted to get back to Cassandra, he was missing her something terrible. So we set off for home. But when we got back Cassandra’s father was dying, and she was coming apart at the seams. Derek found her and as soon as he looked at her she started uncontrollably screaming, it was like she could see how different we were. But little did we know that all the dark magic she was experimenting with had given her deep psychic powers that ended up damaging her inner psyche more than we realized.

Derek tried to console her but she wouldn’t let either of us touch her, she kept screaming that it hurt too much to be touched, she could hear everyone’s thoughts and it was ripping her head apart. But after a day or two she finally let us come near her. Derek was so distraught by her coming undone that he couldn’t bear to watch her fall apart, so he tried to make it as easy as possible for her to adjust to the changes he and I had gone through, but she already knew everything. She had taken the knowledge that her psychic powers had given her to start writing the book. She could hear the legends in her head so she wrote them all down and then wrote what she knew. I had read everything that she wrote and was stunned at her knowledge.

After her father died, she caught the virus. She said that she needed to finish the book so I brought it to her one night and I saw all the herbs and multiple items she had scattered around. When I brought her the book she has started to mumble words in Latin that I couldn’t understand but the candles that she had around her had started to burn higher and brighter and in an instant it was over and she was done chanting. If I could have had a heart attack at that point I probably would have. Derek busted into the room but it was already too late.

“I went to reach for the book but it shocked me and shot across the room. Derek was too consumed with his worry for Cassandra he hadn’t seen the event between me and the book. Cassandra laughed at me and said that we would never know the full contents of that book, that she made sure of it. That’s when she started to cough up blood, we knew she was fading quick and when she started coughing up more blood it became more and more difficult to remain in the same room with her but Derek went and sat next to her holding her hand telling her that he loved her and it was okay to let go, that she didn’t have to hurt anymore. Cassandra seemed to become her old self for a few minutes as Derek held her hand as she faded away, but suddenly she shot up and gave us both a sickening smile and told us that she would find a way to end our kind, that we were predators that preyed on the weak minded and she would find a way to end out existence, and then she died. And that was the last Derek or I had seen of that cursed book, and unfortunately that is where my knowledge of the book ends, but I think it’s guaranteed that you will find out a lot more about this book as that scar on your arm continues to grow. I just hope that we can find out what that scar means and soon. For not only your sake but for ours.” Lacey said continuing to study the scar going up my arm.

“So in a nice way you’re telling me I’m screwed?” I asked trying to catch the meaning off what I had to do with all of this.

“Not necessarily. If I can dig around I can try and figure out more, but the inner workings of that book are left to you. I obviously can’t touch it. But I’ll continue to do more digging and I’ll tell Derek what I find out.”

“Didn’t you catch what I said earlier? I don’t want Derek near any of this. I want nothing more to do with him.”

“Oh please. One fight and you’re ready to throw in the towel. I told you he has a more intense temper than most vampires, he can’t help that. Give him another shot. He’s really not a bad guy and he really does just want to help you. That doesn’t mean that you guys will become all buddy-buddy but at least you know that there is someone else on your side that you can trust.”

“Trust? You seriously expect me to trust him?” I scoffed. Me trust Derek? I don’t think so.

“Uh honey in case you forgot, you’re all alone right now. Derek is all you got right now, give the guy some credit that at least he’s trying to help you. At least as much as you’ll let him. You’re a very complex person in case you weren’t aware.” Lacey giggled.

“How much do you think you know about me?” I asked crossing my arms across my chest.

“Only as much as Derek would share but you’re not that hard to figure out. You aren’t as transparent as you try and make yourself out to be little miss.” Lacey winked making me chuckle a little.

Suddenly I heard a noise come from behind us and Lacey started to do a low growl behind me. I grabbed the stake from out of my boot and spun around to see a tall red haired vampire about 50 feet away from us. This vampire looked starving, when I looked back for Lacey she was gone. What the hell? But before I could dwell on where she went I was knocked on my ass with a snarling vampire on top of me trying to bite into my jugular. Damn this crazy bitch was strong. I finally used every ounce of my strength and threw her off of me. I watched her land about 20 feet away but she was back in my face in an instant. I didn’t have a prayer if I couldn’t find a way to get the upper hand.

I tried to produce a fireball but it was like the magic was syphoned out of my body, along with the oxygen in my lungs. I started to gasp trying to get any amount of oxygen into my lungs but nothing was coming.

The red head climbed on top of me and snarled as she leaned down snarled and bit my jugular. The pain in my neck was bearable, but the fact that I couldn’t breathe wasn’t. I was trying to scream but nothing was coming out, it sounded like whispers. Oh, my God. I’m going to die here. You’ve got to be kidding me. When I started to fade, I felt the red heads weight shoot off of me and I heard some loud growling, snarling, and then I heard the sound of a tree crack and then the sound of dust hitting the ground.

“Alyssa? Alyssa? Wake up! Look at me! What the hell happened to you?” I heard a familiar voice say to me. Derek. What the hell is he doing here?

“Go away.” I mumbled.

“Not a chance, here drink.” Derek said putting his wrist up to my mouth.

“No.” I said weakly shoving his hand away.

“If you don’t take my blood you’ll die. So, shut up, and stop being so goddamn stubborn.” Derek growled opening my mouth shoving his wrist onto my lips. I struggled at first but I was too weak to continue to fight him.

The blood flowed into my mouth and it tasted metallic and salty with a hint of sweetness. It was almost addictive, in a weird way. The taste wasn’t unpleasant and it made my body tingle in a way I’ve never experienced. I wanted to feel disgusted by this exchange but it was exhilarating. I gripped his wrist to bring it closer to my mouth. I could feel my strength returning slowly the more that I drank from Derek.

“Okay you’ve had enough now.” Derek said taking his wrist away from me. I slowly sat up and checked my neck, the wound was healed but I still had wet blood on my neck, and I could breathe a full breath again.

“Holy shit. What the hell happened to me?” I asked clutching my chest grateful that I could breathe again.

“I am not sure. I have never seen anything like that before. You’re awful lucky I was in the area.” Derek chuckled grabbing my hand helping me stand up.

“Funny. I don’t feel very lucky.” I said. Taking my hand away from his after I stood up.

“You have got to be kidding me Alyssa. I just saved your life and you are going to be like this?” Derek yelled throwing his hands up in the air in frustration.

“You don’t expect me to believe you did that for my benefit, do you?” I shouted. If he wanted to be loud, two can play at that game.

“Even if I said I did you wouldn’t believe me anyway! Just because I have something to gain from your safety doesn’t mean I don’t value your life.” Derek said coming very close to me.

“The fact that you have something to gain by keeping me alive, gives me cause not to believe you, and the fact that I don’t trust you adds to it.”

“You not trusting me is probably smart. But right now, I’m the only option you’ve got.”  He said lifting my chin forcing me to look him in the eyes.

“You’d be wrong about that.” I heard someone say from behind us. When I looked past Derek, I saw Dante with a crossbow aimed directly at Derek’s heart. Normally that would be a turn on but right now is not the time.

“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.” Derek said turning around to look at Dante. He crossed his arms and stood protectively in front of me.

“Dante what the hell are you doing here?!” I yelled. He never came into Central Park so why did he come here now?

“Came to see if you were patrolling in your normal spot and I’m glad I did. What are you doing Alyssa? Talking to a vampire? What is the matter with you?” He said giving me a look of shock.

“Dante put the crossbow down and we can talk about this.” I said trying to plead with him.

“Come on son, let’s put the crossbow down and we can discuss this like civilized people.” Derek said his voice very low but not low enough to be threatening.

“I don’t think so!” Dante yelled and launched and arrow straight for Derek.

“No!” I yelled throwing a fireball at the arrow disintegrating it. Before Dante could load another arrow into the crossbow Derek had already taken it from him and had him in a headlock. One swift move and he could snap is head off.

“What happened to civilized discussion?” Dante asked struggling to breathe against Derek’s arm.

“Kind of went out the window when that arrow flew straight towards my heart. Nice save by the way Alyssa. Nice to know you care so much.” Derek said.

“Well I do owe you. Let him go please. Let me talk to him.” I said hoping he wouldn’t make me beg. Him having his arm around Dante’s neck was making me very nervous.

“So he can shoot another arrow at me while I walk away? I don’t think so.” Derek said moving his arm closer to Dante’s neck making it even harder for him to breathe. I could hear Dante’s sharp and slow intake of breath.

“Derek that’s enough! He won’t hurt you. I won’t let him; I think I’ve proven that I’m trustworthy on that point. So please. Give me some time to talk to him.” I asked the panic rising in my voice.

“Ugh fine. I’ll meet you back at your place.” Derek said, and in a blue he was gone.

Dante fell to the ground coughing a bit to catch his breath. I ran to him to only have him shove me away.

“You. Are. Sick.” Dante said catching his breath and looking at me like I had three heads. I have to admit that kind of stung a bit.

“Ouch. You won’t even let me explain without jumping to conclusions.” I said sitting on the ground next to him.

“What is there to explain? You spent all this time killing vampires only to save one? What are you sleeping with him?” Dante asked getting up and walking away from me.

“Okay that’s disgusting. I think there is a specific term for that and it’s called necrophilia. Not my thing. He’s helping me.” I said grabbing Dante’s arm forcing him to look at me, even though I could tell it was the last thing he wanted to do in that moment.

“What could that disgusting bloodsucker help you with?”

“First off, his name is Derek and second, there is a lot that has been going on in the last few days and Hawk sent him to look after me and I am using that as a way for Derek to help me with a little problem I’ve been having.” I said hoping Dante wasn’t going to make me tell him, but I had a feeling that is the only way I am going to get my way out of this.

“Problem? Like that you have utterly lost your mind?”

“Dante please. There is a lot going on that you don’t know about. Things I can’t tell you right now so please I need you to trust me.” I begged as he was trying to force his arm out of my grip.

“I did trust you Alyssa. I trusted you to do the right thing. This? This isn’t the right thing and you know it. But I am going to do the right thing and I’m going to your mother with this. I think she deserves to know what her daughter has been up to.” Dante said and I knew he was serious. I had to stop this now.

“Dante no please! If you care about me at all you won’t do that! I need Derek’s help and if she knows what’s going on she’ll have him killed. Please Dante! Please!” I begged tears welling in my eyes. I needed Derek and I knew Dante would show no mercy and would have him killed in a second.

“What could you possibly need him for? If you want me to consider letting that bloodsucker live, you had better start talking.” Damn it. I knew he was going to do this.

“Fine. I need his help for this.” I said taking off my jacket showing Dante the rose scar and thorns that went up my arm.

“What the hell is that? A burn?” He asked his warm fingers touching the scarred flesh.

“Something like that. I read a book Hawk left for me and after I read it the rose branded itself onto my wrist, by magic. Then these vines of thorns branded their way up my arm. And the rose and the vines on the book itself disappeared after they went onto my skin. Dante, I don’t know what is going on with this but Derek is trying to figure it out. He knew the woman that wrote it so he has information that has been helpful. But that’s all. Please say you believe me.” I asked trying to read his emotionless face.

“You really think I’m an idiot, don’t you?” He asked. How did he not believe me?

“No. It’s the truth. You see the proof right here in front of you and yet you still can’t believe me? Why would I lie about this? Especially to you.”

“Why not to me?” Dante asked throwing his arms angrily in the air.

“Because I trust you and I can tell you anything. I wouldn’t lie to you about this. I need you to believe me Dante, please.” I begged reaching for his face bringing it closer to mine.

“How can I trust someone who claims to hate vampires but saved one right before my eyes?” He asked taking my hands away.

“I did it because I need information. Not because I like him. He saved my life so I owed him. Please, Dante. You can’t tell anyone.” I begged.

“He saved your life?” He asked incredulously.

“Yes. I almost died less than an hour ago. Something or someone was taking my magic away and trying magically to strangle me. I couldn’t stop it, and when a vampire showed up I couldn’t fight back so she bit me and started to drink from me, hence the blood all over me. Derek killed her, saving my life. So, like I said, I owe him. He didn’t have to save my life, but he did, that does mean something to me; vampire or not.” I shrugged watching his eyes widen at the realization that I almost died.

“Holy shit Alyssa. I’m sorry.” Dante said pulling me against his chest in a hug. I wrapped my arms around his waist and snuggled closer into his chest, I haven’t felt this safe in a long time.

“So now you believe me?” I asked looking up at him.

“Well when you finally explained everything it was kind of hard not to. But I have to be honest. I still don’t trust him, and I can’t believe you do.” Dante said pulling my chin up so I could look at him.

“I don’t trust him personally. I only trust him enough to know that he won’t kill me or let me get killed. He proved that enough tonight.”

“You have to trust him more than that Alyssa. I saw the way you reacted when I shot that arrow at him. You looked genuinely panicked.” He said pulling away from me. Why is he trying to make something big out of this?

“Look Dante you can’t be serious right now. I told you he might know a way to stop what’s happening to me. I need him for that. But don’t worry I haven’t forgotten what he is. When the time is right Dante, I’ll be the one to kill him.” I said with conviction in my voice. Whether it was true or not was irrelevant, he just needed to believe me and drop it.

“You’ll kill him?” He asked incredulously.

“I might be the only one who can. He trusts me and he wouldn’t see it coming.” I said gritting my teeth. Why is talking about Derek’s death bothering me so much?!

“Well, Jefferson, you sure don’t disappoint. Here I thought you were going soft.” Dante said smiling pulling me back to him to kiss me. I kissed him back but pulled away.

“I should be getting back. If I’m not back soon he might come back to make sure you haven’t offed me or something.” I giggled but I could feel him suddenly tense.

“He’s staying with you?” He growled.

“No! Are you insane?!” I yelled. I was not telling him about Derek staying yesterday. Not happening.

“But yet he knows where you’re staying and you haven’t bothered to tell me?” He asked. I could see a trace of hurt cross into his eyes.

“I don’t need a lot of people knowing where I am Dante. It’s nothing personal- “

“Sure feels personal.” He said cutting me off.

“It’s not though. Derek was able to track me down somehow. I didn’t want anyone knowing where I was. I just wanted to be left alone.” I said.

“Alright you want to be left alone? You got it.” Dante said starting to walk away.

“Wait Dante I didn’t mean it like that!” I said my voice rising in pitch in panic. I can’t leave it like this.

“Alyssa. I think you’ve established you don’t want me in your business, so I’m going to bow out now before I get mentally slapped again.” He said completely turning from me and walking away. When I started to try, and protest he ran, he was always a faster runner than me so there wasn’t a point to try and go after him. I know where he patrols if I want to find him.

I smoked myself back in front of the hotel and went straight to the elevator and up to my room. I saw some of the staff giving me strange looks and I knew it was due to the dried blood all over me, but I just told them I was in a theatrical group and we were filming a murder scene. That seemed to appease their minds.

I quickly put my key card in the door and wasn’t surprised when I saw Derek sitting on the couch. But I was surprised to see the rage on his face. What was going on with him?

“Um. Hi.” I said trying not to look at him. I didn’t even have the patience to try and guess what was going on with him. He never answered me, he just continued to stare at me with that angry look in his eyes.

“Did you have a good visit with your friend?” He asked through clenched teeth.

“No not really.” I said going into the kitchen pouring myself a glass of juice.

“Is there any information that you would like to share with me Alyssa?” Derek asked his eyes boring into mine. What is he talking about?

“Not that I can think of.” I said taking a sip of my juice. When I went to put the glass down Derek was right in my face scaring the bejesus out of me.

“Nothing? Nothing at all? Nothing of vital importance, or at least to me?” He growled his face only inches from mine. The look in his eyes made my heart start pounding in my chest and my breathing started getting faster.

“Derek I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I said.

“So you didn’t tell your friend that when the time was right you would be the one to kill me?” He said snarling starting to bare his fangs. How the hell did he hear that?

“How do you know about that?” I asked. My voice quivering with fear. I’m not afraid of much but the look Derek was giving me scared me.

“I didn’t immediately come back here like I told you I would. I stayed around to keep an eye on the two of you. Just to make sure you were safe, and I got more information than what I bargained for.”

“Derek I didn’t mean that. I had to tell Dante something. If I didn’t say I was going to kill you he would have come after you, and you don’t know Dante like I do. He would have never stopped until he killed you. Dante is one of the best trackers and fighters we have at the academy. He was one of the first students to get an instructor position. Who do you think trained me?” I said watching the ferocious look begin to leave his eyes.

“What exactly are you saying? You have no intentions on killing me?” He asked starting to back away a little bit.

“Well, not today.” I smirked.

“Well that’s a relief.” He chuckled walking back to his seat.

“Maybe for you. I’m putting my ass on the line to keep you alive. Or dead. Or undead. Ugh, whatever you are!” I said taking another sip of my juice. God, I could use a stiff drink to settle my nerves right about now. But strawberry kiwi juice is just gonna have to do.

“Well, you and this Dante fellow seemed pretty close. Is he your boyfriend or something?” Derek asked smiling at me, obviously trying to make me uncomfortable.

“We are pretty close. Or at least we used to be. I think after tonight that ship has pretty much sailed. And no, he was never my boyfriend. Just someone who seemed to share a bit of interest in me, which is not something I’m used to. He was just a friend, that might have had the potential to be more. But like I said, that ship has sailed after tonight.” I rambled walking into the living room and sitting on the couch.

“Can I ask why?” Derek asked leaning back in his chair putting his feet up on the edge of the coffee table. He looked so relaxed in that position, almost dare I say, human.

“It’s pretty simple. You.” I said putting my head down staring at my fingers in my lap as I twirled them around. Damn nervous habit.

“What about me?” He asked. He looked quite amused, although I’m not sure why.

“The fact that I haven’t killed you yet kind of did that. But also, the fact that I told him you’re helping me, and that you know where I’m staying and he doesn’t. I wouldn’t tell him because I don’t need him blabbing it to everyone and then I’d have a cavalry from the academy coming to bring me back. Probably led by my mother.”

“Is he bad at keeping secrets or something?”

“No, it’s not that. It’s just that he has sucky timing, as he proved tonight. Knowing my luck, he would come while you’re here and that would be a bloodbath that I don’t feel like cleaning up.” I said. Wow we are actually having a conversation. Damn I’m surprised.

“Who would you help in this bloodbath?” Derek snickered obviously trying to push my buttons. Sorry buddy, you’re going to have to try harder than that.

“Neither. I’d let the two of you sort out who survived.” I said looking at him just to give him a dirty look.

“Well that’s disappointing.” He chuckled.

Ignoring his comment, I looked at the clock on the wall and saw it was 5:45. Close to sunrise.

“Have you looked at the time?” I yelled getting up quicker than I meant to.

“Not until now. Your panic is touching.” He snickered.

“Oh what are you intending to stay here? Again?” I sighed hoping the answer was different than I thought it was. I should know better.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t be opposed to it.” He said his face getting suddenly serious.

“Ugh. You’re testing my hospitality. But fine. You can stay here.” I said huffing and throwing myself back onto the couch. Or well for today it was my bed.

“Thank you Alyssa. I promise I will make up for the use of your hospitality.” He said giving me a half smile that made me smile back. It was almost like an automatic reflex.

“Would you like me to take the couch tonight? Or today. Whatever you would like to call it.” He asked.

“No. The bedroom has the least sunlight exposure. You’ll be safer in there.” I said. I hope he realizes how much I’m risking having him here. I doubt it though.

“Your help hasn’t gone unnoticed Alyssa. I promise I will make this up to you.”

“Yeah, yeah you said that already. You saved my life, so I guess I owe you one.” I said getting up to go get my pillow and blanket out of the bedroom. When I had them in my hands Derek was already behind me causing me to jump and drop my blanket and pillow on the floor. He laughed at me as he picked them up.

“You really need to stop doing that.” I grumbled taking my things back from him.

“I’m sorry. I haven’t been around a human this long for a long time. I’m used to doing things quicker than your pace.” He smirked. Ugh he’s so arrogant. Smug bastard.

“Whatever. Do you need anything? Cause if not I’m going to drop this stuff off out there and get a quick shower. I need to get all this blood and stuff off of me.” I said. I completely forgot about all the dried blood and dirt I had all over me. Between Dante, and Derek’s eavesdropping I hadn’t had time to notice my appearance much.

“I think I’ll manage for a bit.” He said already going over to the bed to unlace his shoes.

I quickly dropped my blanket and pillow off on the couch and when I walked in I was staring at Derek’s bare back. Wow he was built. I quickly grabbed a set of sweats out of one of my suitcases and started walking to the bathroom. But when I turned to shut the door I saw the front of him. His bare chest showed the pale planes of his chest and his impressive abs. His biceps and shoulder muscles moved swiftly as he stretched his arms up, he wasn’t even paying any attention to me. Oh, Mylanta. When he started to turn his head towards me I quickly shut the door. I couldn’t even hide my blush from myself. I could feel the heat rushing into my face. Fanbloodytastic. My heart rate was having a hard time going back to normal.

I turned on the water making it as hot as it would go. I needed the hot water to loosen the knots in my back and to loosen the muscles in my whole body. I stripped out my clothes and tossed all of them in the trash. No matter what I do I wouldn’t be able to get the blood out of the clothes so I wasn’t even going to try. When I got into the shower the hot water instantly began unknotting my back and loosened all my muscles. I watched as the clear water turned light brown and orange looking from the dried blood coming off my skin. I grabbed my shampoo and my heart rate started to slow by the familiar scent of fruit.

I made slow work of my shower so I could stand there and enjoy the hot water and the steam rising out of the shower stall. When I stepped out I went to the vanity to brush my teeth and I had to wipe the steam off of the mirror. The bruises I thought I would have on my face were nonexistent. Derek feeding me his blood must have taken care of that. But the headache I was starting to get was one of the side effects I was worried about. But other than that, I didn’t feel different which is a relief.

I pulled on my sweats and quietly walked out of the bathroom. When I saw, Derek lying in bed he was already asleep. His shirt and shoes were neatly placed next to the bed on the floor. His mouth was slightly open as he drew in slow breaths. He was laying on his side towards me and I couldn’t help but look at him. He looked so normal like this. So, normal and peaceful, and almost human. He couldn’t be fully human like this because no human could look like this when they slept. I know I looked like a hot mess when I slept. I only know this thanks to Killian and his lovely candid photos.

I walked out into the living room and laid down on the couch waiting for sleep to overtake me. The last time I looked at the clock it was 6:25 a.m. So, at some point I fell asleep, and with sleep came my dreams. Both good and bad.
