The story deals with the challenges of a cop whose son was kidnapped in exchange for a drug lord.

Sergeant John received an anonymous call at his home in the wee hours of the morning. He grabbed the receiver and heard a cold voice at the other’s end.

“Is your son’s name Martin? And he studies Masters in Computer Science in A university?”

John has encountered prank calls similar and he barked at the receiver.

“Yes, and I am Sergeant John. What is your name?”

The voice at the other end gave a shrill laugh.

The commotion had woken Mary, his wife who was sleeping beside him.

“What is the matter? Your office colleagues do not allow you to sleep either in the night.” She grumbled in her sleep.

“We have your son with us,” replied the laughing voice. “We want you to answer a few questions.”

John’s heart skipped a beat.

“Who are you? And where have you kept my son?” – John

John’s raised voice had woken up Mary, and she sat opposite him with a thousand sad expressions on her face. Since she had encountered similar situations, she did not ask John any questions.

“So, kindly answer our questions, or your son will be cut to pieces and thrown in your backyard.”

John’s silence persuaded the caller to start asking questions.

“You are the in-charge of the security force, which is going to escort drug lord SS to the court and back to security. Am I correct, cop?”

“Yes,” John understood. “So for exchange of your leader SS during the escort, you have kidnapped my son.”

“How intelligent you are, cop,” replied the voice, “We have got more deals than you imagine. My name is Second Command.”

John had put the speaker on the mobile so Mary could also hear the conversation. The name of ‘second command’ went to John’s brain like a bullet. The enforcer for SS, he was known for his cruelty and different types of killings. .

Mary broke into silent sobs. She knew her husband would not falter in his line of duty, come what may.

“So what do you have to say, John? Two days, afterwards, the work starts. When you escort along with your men, our leader, we will ambush you. It is your duty to keep SS alive and in return, our men will also not fire at you.”

“You can do with my son whatever you want,” Thundered John. “I will not be a part of this barter system.” He was surprised at his grim voice.

“You heard my name, punk,” shrieked the voice at the other end. “Have you not heard my name in numerous killings?”

“Yes, I have, but your leader has killed thousands of men, destroyed an entire generation with his drugs. Come, what may, I will have him punished.”

“What if we kill your son ruthlessly,” shouted the voice. The decibel was high so Mary heard it and broke into sobs.

“If the Lord is the saver, HE will definitely save my son,” John’s voice broke.

Just then, the door bell rang; Mary and John were caught unawares. John took his revolver, and Mary with trembling hands went to unlock the door.

Mary opened the door and she found her son Martin along with the SWAT squad.

“Good Morning, Mom,” and he hugged his mother.

Mary and John looked in amazement at the SWAT team who stormed his house.

“Sorry, John” the SWAT corporal spoke. ‘Could you please switch on your TV?”

John switched on the remote and the news made his blink in surprise.

The News:

“A shoot out occurred in the boys hostel premises of A university, in which the second-in-command to the drug lord, SS was shot and severely injured. All the intruders were shot dead. It is still a surprise as to why the thugs came into the hostel.”

John understood. The court had given special instructions to the government to safeguard all the personnel who will be in the escort service to take SS to court.

“So how was my mimicry voice?” Martin asked with a twinkle in the eye.

John laughed and as a reply, gave a karate punch to the shoulder of his son.

There was laughter, and Mary hurried to the kitchen to bring refreshments for the visitors.
