We are always criticized. We do what other people want from us, but are we happy?

A thousand voices echo in my head. Some of them are screaming out for help, and I do my best to comfort them. They don't like to listen though; they keep insisting that they're drowning. I yell at them and tell them that they're okay; they aren't drowning, they just need to learn to stand on their own. They won't listen.

I hear the voice of my dad. He is encouraging me by saying, "Honey, I know you can do better,". The words kick me in the stomach and force me to realize that, no, I really can't. I try to him that I am trying to be the best I can be, but he keeps insisting that I'm not trying hard enough. "No! I'm trying! I'm trying!" I scream, but he keeps insisting, "You can do better,".

My mother's voice gnaws on me as she gently whispers, "I've never been proud of you,". I try to apologize for not being the daughter she always wanted, but she won't listen; it doesn't change anything in her mind.

Then all the voices run together. They are shouting. They are whispering. They are talking all at once. "Why don't you have a boyfriend yet?", "What are you doing with your life?", "Your dreams aren't practical", "Why did you break up with that one guy? He was sweet,", "Why can't you be more driven?", "Why aren't you as smart as your sister?", "Your cousin is going to be a teacher, what are you doing with your life?".

Then all the voices stop.

It's just me.

I feel a peace like the calm after a storm. The voices are too distant now to hear, and then one voice; my voice, is left.

"Are you happy?"
