I must admit something. As stoically as I go about Facebooking and Twittering that I am a writer this, blogger that, inside sometimes, I feel like a sham. A charlatan. Who says I’m a writer? Oh, yes... I’m the only one who’s saying it, really. I feel outclassed all the time. In a school of fish, I am goofy Gomer Guppy swimming against a current of fierce Frasier Flounder (flounder are awesome fish!)

I spend a lot of energy psyching myself out of writing. Sometimes, I’ll let a day go by...

Why write? What if the thoughts don’t flow? Don’t encourage disappointment! Call of Duty Zombies entertains for hours after a hard day’s work.

After three days of no writing...

I’m about to freaking pop if I don’t let it out! Jotting this here and there in my notebook no longer cuts it (yeah, I was kinda writing all along anyway)!

Yup! Pretty much like that! Ahhh... The relief writing brings to my busy mind... Calms the rough, watery emotions down. Helps me make sense of myself while indulging in another love. Words! I love language! Always have! Clichés, similes, homophones & homonyms, rhymes, malapropisms - language titillates!

Behind every what-I-want-to-be-when-I-grow-up phase, writer was too scared to scream out for its place at the table next to veterinarian and actress. Why write has haunted me a long time. But, no more! No more of this drowning in doubt.

Why write?

1. Because I love it. I need it to feel whole each day.

2. I believe I know how. I know the basics at least (doubt, I hate you). On the 1-10 scale of 1 - Word Nerd to 10 –Grammarian, I’d say I fall on level four. No basket case, but definite room for improvement. And I’m growing every day.

3. It’s way better than talking! What comes out garbled and mushed-mouth in person, comes out crystal clear on paper. Men never get why I’d rather text!

4. I’m weary of living a life unfulfilled. I’m going for it! If there is any way at all possible that my passion can also be my career, it is now or never that I pursue the dream.

5. All that turbulence in my head. Well, it’s not in my head when I write, no matter what I write. There’s so much to get out.

 Why write?

Why not? If you have something to say, can write it clearly, and have unique ways of expressing it, that’s solid enough reason there! Practice the fine art of fighting off that deadly disease, Creeping Doubt, every single day.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well, so is talent!

I love Chris Rock. According to my neurons, his brand of ‘truth-comedy’ is sharp, witty, unapologetic, and downright funny. Not everyone agrees though. There are as many Chris Rock haters as there are Chris Rock fans on our fair planet. Are our neurons not receiving the same signals?

Not just beauty folks... If a case of Creeping Doubt does flare out of control, let’s remind ourselves that taste is subjective. Chances are, out of the seven billion people living amongst us, millions on social media, someone will ‘get us’.

Some readers might admire your heartfelt candor or your electric skills at building suspense. Some readers might fall in love with the surreal worlds you create or the moving words you choose.

Believe in all those inspiring memes we see on constant loop on our favorite social media platforms. I bet my everything on them. Just dive in those waters, get your rhythm, then find your own way to swim.
