A Modern Day Fairy Tale (For My Daughter)
There came a time
When she found herself imprisoned
By a dark haired angry witch
In a 12th floor tower block
Much like Rapunzel
But with no long hair for the Prince to climb
No oven no refrigerator
A mattress on the concrete floor
Two windows unadorned
Nothing but boxes of books
Assorted novels mainly paperbacks
Arranged in rows to protect her
Marking hours by the moons glow
Calculating ninety days or thereabouts
Until the curse was lifted
Wind howling through the gaps
Pigeons cooing on the sills
A way out of the fortress she did not know
As in most fairy tales she'd ever read
She was rescued
Not by a handsome Prince
But a beautiful Princess
Who offered her the haven
Of her soft and springy sofa bed
And so she fled her modern day cell
Dragging her boxes of books
While the witch enraged looked on
Powerless to act against the beautiful Princess
For a daughter's love
Is greater than any witch's spell
