The Visitors

As you lay in the darkness you can feel a change, an alteration in the atmosphere. You breathe slowly and deeply, the air frosty cold now in your lungs. You know what this means – they are approaching. This is not the first time that you have been paid a visit.

A soft hiss, so quiet that if you had not been listening for it you would not have noticed it at all. Last time this happened you had written it off as imagination, nothing more. This night you know better and even though you find you are unable to move, your body shivers.

You train your eyes onto the door. Strange how when they don’t have to open it that that is where they chose to enter last time. You are alert, attentive, waiting for a sign -- but there is nothing. Your eyes are stinging now. You need to blink. In that fraction of a second that your eyes are closed there is a change. Instantly you can see a shimmering, but one of darkness not light.

There are bits of white appearing in the black now. Not a bright white but a dull waxy one, sort of reminiscent of old bone. Your eyes are fixed on this increasing whiteness, watching as more features form, seemingly out of the air.

There are two of them, you can tell that now. Small round heads of this waxy white; big deep dark black eyes. The nose is visible but almost flat, looking like what it really is – an air vent. The mouth looks almost human, a bit thin and cruel; but you know exactly what horrors are hidden inside those bloodless lips.

Their appearance is becoming clearer, growing stronger. Long thin necks that those heads rest upon leading down to their long thin waxy white bodies. There are no marks on their bodies of any kind.

The arms are unnaturally long and thin too, with hands tipped not by fingers but by sets of pincered claws. Although those two arms look weak and weedy you know from past experience that this is a deception. Once those arms lock on to you there is no chance of escape.

The legs, too, are long and thin with an angled joint where a humans knee would be. Their feet, or whatever it is they stand on, are out of view; too low to be seen from your prone position.

Emergence complete, the two beings can now approach you. They take their time, hissing at you as they get nearer and nearer. They relish the fear that is building inside you – the total panic and terror. Adrenalin surges through you and your heart pumps so fast that you cannot believe that it can keep going at this same rate for long. ‘Fight or flight’ your brain is telling you but you cannot break out of the paralysis.

You try so hard to resist the fear because you know how much they relish it. For these are vampires in the true sense of the word but instead of feeding on blood they get their nourishment from emotions. And the stronger the emotional turmoil is the more satisfying it becomes to them. Any feelings, good or bad, they will drain from you, leaving you so dry all later emotions are sucked up like water to an empty sponge. They have made you a receptacle to visit time and time again.

The vampire closest to you leans forward, staring straight at you with those bottomless black eyes. It lets out a foetid hiss, clamps you by the shoulders and bares those needle-like teeth. As they penetrate the skin on your neck you want to scream, to struggle, but that only gives the vampire that extra bit more of satisfaction.

You can feel yourself becoming drained, becoming numb. The second vampire steps forward to hiss angrily at its companion. This time you barely register the sensation of those teeth plunging their way through your skin.

By the time they’ve finished feeding you have become nothing more than an empty husk. The morning will see you being attacked by an intensity of feelings, a roller coaster of emotional turbulence. And it will carry on this way until the vampires return. But for now they are going. They have no further use for you at present.

Your eyes close and you drift into a deep and dreamless sleep.
