Halloween Comes Early

It seems Halloween comes early

At least to all the stores

And there is just no subtlety,

It’s right inside the doors.

It starts half way through August

And the momentum, it increases,

So much paraphernalia

Never, it seems, decreases.

There are all the decorations

To give your house a ‘scare’;

Go on, make it frightening

‘Approach – if you dare!’

Then there are the costumes

Mostly for up to 10’s

But there’s adults ones there too,

Both for women and for men.

The masks it seems are everywhere

And some – grotesque they are,

I wouldn’t like to meet with them

Or see them from afar.

There are bags and bags of sweets

Just for this occasion

With fangs, pumpkins and body bits,

A consumer led sensation.

There’s one thing I have noticed,

On the shelves it does all sit;

I’ve not seen much in trolleys,

Just a little bit.

Is it all left over from other years,

Stock built up in the past;

For all the space it’s given

It’s not moving very fast.

But even now there’re Christmas bits

Appearing on those shelves;

Once Halloween is over

There’ll be room for little else.

Somebody must buy this stuff,

I haven’t got a clue --

I know that it is not for me

But maybe it’s for you!
