Chapter 3:

 

The Evolution of the Soul:

 

Even spiritual evolution is a process, and often reflects the social and political progress of a civilisation. Therefore, if a nation has progressed to the level of Tribalism, then its spiritual and religious beliefs will reflect that. But if it has progressed to include large institutions, then the religious system will be structured in much the same way. Often - however - when a system shows signs of decay, it is the spiritual leadership that has to take the lead towards the transformation that must take place. Thus the Reformation was largely responsible for the fall of the tyranny of the Dark Ages.

 

As science will raise the level of physical understanding, so faith should do the same in the spiritual. Once the religions of the day become a stumbling-block in the path of spiritual progress, the time has come for those religious structures to undergo change. At present many conventional religions have become introspective, and more concerned with their internal strife, than undertaking their Divine mandate to lead the way to greater spiritual enlightenment. Many have become divided, not along religious lines, but over denominational differences. And each claim sole right to the keys of revelation and even Heaven itself.

 

Small wonder then that so many religions find their membership dwindling, and their places of worship empty. Has it not been said that a divided house cannot stand? All of them claim that theirs is the only ‘Truth’, when that which is universal cannot be limited to the incomplete understanding of one group of individuals. All the volumes of books in the world could not contain but a fraction of the Truth!

 

All religions claim to have fathomed the secrets of godliness, and that they are more righteous than those who differ from them. Perhaps it is meet that we look again upon the true nature of this phenomenon called ‘Godliness’. It has been said that this word means to bear a God-likeness. In other words, to reflect the Divine Nature. Elsewhere it is stated that ‘… God is love …’ Therefore, to become godly - or to be more precise God-like - is to express that aspect of the Divine nature that defines it most. Thus if God is love, then those who seek to be like God must be motivated, inspired, and guided by love. While it is true that the Divine Nature is more than just love, this is the underlying motive behind all Divine activity. It was said of Yahweh that He ‘… so loved the world that He gave His only Son …’

 

Love gives direction and meaning to all other activity. True godliness speaks of authority and power, and love is the key that unlocks these treasures. How could it be otherwise? Love is the safeguard against the abuse of both power and authority. It prevents those who are in authority from becoming despots, and those who have the power from becoming tyrants. It also ensures that all who have the privilege of exercising power and authority do so for the common - nay the Highest Good. Again that which is known as the Wiccan Rede states that one should seek only the ‘… Good of all …’, and that one’s actions are done in such a way as to ‘… harm none …’

 

The problem with introspection arises when this results in one becoming detached or distant from those around one. Thus it is that many religions have lost touch with the very people towards which they have been given a mandate to show love and compassion, and that would benefit most from their care and guidance.

 

In His earthly ministry, Yeshua spent most of His time caring - not only for the souls of others - but also for their physical condition as well. Lepers were purportedly made whole, demoniacs released from possession, even multitudes fed … Thus when He said that one should ‘… do unto others as you would have them do unto you …’, He could speak with the authority of one who was well-versed in the practice of charity. His acquaintance with the torments of death gave substance to His words when He said: ‘In this is love manifest, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.’ He preached not to the poor while Himself living in the comfort of luxury. Nor spoke He of love save that He displayed the very nature of the word. His attitude towards the hypocrites - even the religious leaders of the day - indicated that He knew the nature of true authority, while His power was proven when He spoke to the swirling waters, saying: “Peace - Be still …” and the waters were said to obey His command.

 

But power and authority are in vane if not inspired by love. And any system - even a religious system - that does not have love as its basis, is subject to decay and corruption. Hence the necessity for change. This is why it is said that ‘… these three remain: Faith, Hope, and Love. And the greatest of these is Love …’ Indeed, should any of the elements of this triad be absent, the system would collapse if it does not reform itself. And if love is the greatest of these three, then how calamitous it would be if it were not at the foundation of society.

 

At the very heart of love is the search for equality. Love seeks not to rule over another, nor would it be ruled by another. Rather it would that those in fellowship would share or have an equal part in all things. One who seeks to be lord over others, and will not first become their servant, is not worthy of the office that he seeks.

 

Mankind’s greatest fault is not immorality, neither is it selfishness, nor greed … Humanity’s greatest fault is a sense of inadequacy. Indeed this fuels all other evils. This is the true nature of what is known as Sin. In the ancient language of its origin, this word was used to describe an archer that misses his target, or misses the mark. Therefore it is not the act of failing that is called ‘sin’, but rather the sense of failure. From every turn, men and women are convinced that they do not have what it takes. Those who would have you purchase their wares would have you believe that you are not good enough, not attractive, young or rich enough … unless you own this product.

 

Even in the illustration of Eden - even in Paradise - the Serpent would convince the fledgling human race that her true worth lay not with that which was within, but from an external source. It was not the eating of the Fruit of Knowledge that would condemn Eve to damnation eternal, but the sense of need. Much has been said on this before, but it is worth looking at again in the sense that it gives one an idea of the root of sin, its consequence, and its remedy.

 

 

Although not in the sense that those who claim to be His followers would present it, the so-called redemptive work of Yeshua was indeed achieved by His experience of Death, or Near Death. But first one must look at the man’s life, for although in every way He was the Son of Yahweh - and the Son of the Most High, the Divine Source - so was He the Son of Man, for He portrayed the True or ‘Divine’ Humanity. His life was in every way remarkable, not merely because it was free of immorality - for there have been many who could claim this - but that He achieved many remarkable feats, called ‘Miracles’. He drew many fond followers to Himself, not by force, but because they saw the Divine Light shining through Him. Alas, He also attracted the attention of many an opponent.

 

Is this not the way of many exceptional people? There are always those who would love them for their brilliance, but there are also many who are jealous - and even fearful - thereof. In Yeshua’s heart there was infinite possibility, for He feared no failure. He knew that with His God, all things are possible. There was no sense of inadequacy or lack, but that all things pertaining to a life that is in every way God-like was at His disposal, as long as He would use it to fulfil His Father’s mandates.

 

It was not Yeshua’s sense of ethics or moral code that made His life exemplary, but that He displayed the infinite possibilities at the disposal of one who knows no bounds save that all that he would do would be done for the good of all. In hope there is no boundary, in faith there is no fear, and in love there is no restriction save that all be achieved for love’s sake. Yeshua’s life showed this to be possible, and His achievements - even his Near-Death experience, the Resurrection and eventual Ascension - proved that not even death can stand in the way of one who is inspired by love.

 

It is not an emotional or intellectual attachment to the person of Christ that will secure man’s path to Glory, but a consciousness that the same power and Divine Spirit dwells within your mortal flesh, and that - once this has been shed for the last time - this power will be released to soar to greater heights in the Ultimate Ascension that is common to all living beings. As evolution does not belong to one creature alone in a physical sense, so does it apply to the spiritual as well. Even Ascension is but another stepping-stone - the Source alone knows to where.

 

And what of the so-called ‘Cross’? Why was it significant, or even necessary? The Church believes that Christ died so that - by confession of faith in Him, or rather their interpretation thereof - one would obtain forgiveness for one’s sin and entry into a Heaven set aside for them and them alone. Any who refuse to follow this narrow path will suffer eternity in Hell. The problem is that, if one would ask a Muslim, one would find his or her answers to be much the same, save that the names and details might have been changed. The same applies to the Jew, the Hindu, the Buddhist … and every other religion under the sun, and indeed under Heaven.

 

So, did Christ die for Christians alone? To achieve salvation and resurrection for them only? May it never be! By His example He showed that - if love is your motivation, and your intent is pure - not even death itself will bar your way. By His life He showed what was possible this side of death, and after the Cross He gave us but a glimpse of the life that could be ours thereafter. His death experience was to put an end to the sense of inadequacy that has plagued the human soul ever since Eden.

Not only that, but His work put an end to the necessity for the system of offering and sacrifice, that had been put in place, because the poison from the fruit of knowledge had not yet been purged from the human soul. As has been mentioned, this gave rise to a new era in which all saints would be priests, no longer needing to approach their Deity via the high priest, for One had been appointed as such - One in the Order of Melchizedech. No more would nationality, nor affinity to a certain national faith or priesthood, be necessary. This also means that none can lay sole claim to the Seat of Glory, but the doors to the Council of the Holy have been opened to all.

 

For a season the great religions prevailed until it was deemed that humanity was ready to make the next step in the process of spiritual evolution known as sanctification. And the time for that change is at hand. Even of old it was foretold that an era would come when it would no longer be necessary that one man should say to another: “This is how you should know your God …” for all shall bear that knowledge, even from the greatest to the least.

 

Indeed religious affiliation was never the standard: Was Abraham a Jew first ere he embarked on his pilgrimage? This cannot be, for such a nation did not yet exist. Was Moses a lesser child of Israel, and of Yahweh, before he was given the Tablets of the Law? Again this is folly. And what of the early followers of Christ? What is now termed the ‘Full Tenet of Scripture’ did not exist. Were they less ‘Christian’ even though the Church as we know it did not yet exist? May it never be.

 

Was Mohamed a lesser child of Allah before the Koran was complete, or the writer of the Bhagavad Gita less Hindu, or Saladin less Buddhist … ? This too would be folly. Those who first believed were no less children of their Gods than those who followed after. Truly in essence, they were more so because their fellowship with their Deities was less interrupted by the ravages of time and corruption.

 

The true Children of Heaven are they whose faith is not in their Church, Temple, Shrine … nor their affiliation with a certain religion or nationality. The Children of Heaven are so because they have a vital and personal acquaintance with their Source. This has never changed save that the religious have become insistent that their way is the only way. Ah! – the void between religiosity and true godliness! The former restricts and restrains, while the latter liberates the soul to become truly God-like. The one would exclude, the other embrace. The former would bring division and strife, while the latter encourages all to greater unity in love. The one is inspired by - and inspires - fear, while the other releases the soul from fear and inadequacy. The former is disloyalty, the latter faith.

 

As has been said, mankind’s greatest malady is a deep sense of inadequacy. As the Serpent in the Garden once succeeded to, so have many others who have sought to suppress or subvert man’s true potential by playing on this one greatest human flaw. Yeshua revealed the true nature of Humanity, and his true potency as a Child of the Divine. His life, His Death Experience, and whatever happened afterwards - even His ascension - would have been in vain save that His was the example by which a mortal human could obtain immortality.

 

 

In the previous volume, it was mentioned that the Enemy’s greatest fear is humanity fully realised. Consequently, this is also the Source’s greatest ambition, and Creation’s greatest need. But this is not restricted to humanity alone: The human race is but one of many - even beyond the counting thereof - who are on the path to full realisation, which is Ascension. Even Earth herself would transcend her present state so that she may better reflect Gaia’s true nature. All who are on this path shall be called the True Children of Heaven.

 

I would now speak of Heaven’s opposite - of the ‘place’ called Hell: To the Christian it is the place of damnation for all but those who confess faith in Christ. To the Muslim it is the same, but the one who would save the soul from Eternal Fire is Allah … If the above were true, then this God could be perceived as exclusive, and only in favour of the Elite. Small wonder that there are many - and their number is growing - that reject this. The only problem is that the same have utterly denied even the existence of such a place. This is an extreme reaction, although not entirely erroneous. Just because something has been misinterpreted does not mean that it is not real.

 

Therefore it is advantageous to look at another possibility: It has been said that Heaven is a state of uninterrupted fellowship and union with the Divine Source. One in which access to all the resources in Creation is available to those who seek, where perfect love is indeed perfect, and perfect trust equally so. Above all it is a state of being to which the soul aspires - and achieves - willingly and by choice rather than force, fear, coercion or compulsion.

 

There is also the belief that it is a state in which the soul’s full creative potential is realised in that it is able to create its own world, even its own paradise. Verily, the Divine still resides therein - and is the central focus thereof - but not the originator. At this stage of spiritual evolution, the soul is equipped to take so bold a step because this state of fellowship began – albeit in its infancy – while the soul was in its earlier stages of development. Perfection is not attained save that it begins in a less than perfect state.

 

But what then of the state of being known as Hell? As with the aforementioned, it is the innermost desire of the heart that determines the soul’s reality. Therefore, if the soul desires to continue - even unto eternity - in a corrupt and unholy state, then it too will create an environment that will allow it to do so. As much as Heaven is a place where good and wholesome desires are fulfilled, Hell therefore is a state of being in which only hatred, corruption, and vileness can survive.

 

Again this may even begin to manifest prior to its final expression: One only needs to look at the human world today to see the seeds of Hell already: Violence, abuse, environmental degradation - Racial, social and religious prejudice - Disregard for others, self-centredness, selfish ambition … The list is seemingly endless. If a soul chooses these rather than that which is wholesome, praiseworthy and of good report, how then shall it be expected to dwell in a reality that would force it to live to the contrary?

 

 

 

 

It is worth reminding oneself - O Reader - that such a choice is not made in a single incarnation, but manifests itself in many different ways in repeated cycles, and in ever-increasing measure. As the righteous soul would reflect its true nature in ever-improving clarity, so the being that chooses the contrary grows evermore corrupt.

 

Contrary to religious belief, this state is not as a result of one’s failing to adhere to a certain faith or belief system. After all, it is not the validity of one’s God that is called to question, but by the fruits of one’s faith - i.e. the actions that faith inspires. As a true Son of Righteousness shall be known in life by his fruits, so shall the cogency of his faith at last be tested by the actions inspired thereby. Alas, the same is true with the truly wicked.

 

Thus, as the righteous shall create for themselves a haven where only that which is in harmony with the desires of their heart exist, so shall those who have chosen darkness instead of light. This indeed is what is known as ‘Hell’.

 

If this is indeed true, then it follows that both states of being can begin on Earth. And herein lies the key to changing one’s environment. If one aspires to making the world around him a better place, he must first ensure that his relationship with himself and his Source is intact. The soul must then evaluate her motives and the intentions of her heart that these may be purged from all that is contrary to the highest good, and be rid of guilt, inadequacy and negative influences. Thereafter the same soul is free to soar as a mighty eagle as long as it remains free from entanglements.

 

Again the key to open the door is to know and acknowledge the Authentic Self. Indeed anything else would be a contradiction. After all - if one cannot be true to oneself - how can that person be true to anything or anyone else? It is said that the Word is alive and active, and that it knows the intentions and the will of the heart. It is also said that the end of self-knowledge is to ‘… know as we are known …’, to ‘… see evermore clearly that which we see but as a dim reflection now …’. If one’s Source knows the heart with such clarity, and if the desired result of self-knowledge is to behold oneself as clearly as your God - whoever that god may be - knows you, then surely such knowledge will inspire the righteous soul to produce fruits after its own kind.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Road Ahead:

 

In this time of change, those who would that the new day dawns - and none too soon - would be perceived as a threat to all who would maintain the status quo. Ever would they seek to eliminate this threat, even though - despite their efforts - the transformation would still take place. One cannot prevent evolution from moving forward. The Reformation - once set in motion - could not be stopped. The Renaissance still occurred, despite the dire resistance from the powers that be.

 

By the same token, the changes that are about to take place - and indeed are already in progress - are inevitable. The question is whether humanity will resist them or learn by them. This will not prevent the change from taking place, but will influence whether such change occurs peacefully or not. This is because the manner of transformation is oft not in the hands of those who welcome it, but in the hands of those who do not.

 

In history, the revolution that ended the tyranny in Britain took place with relative peace and ease. This is in sharp contrast to that of the French. But then again, it was not the English Queen who told those begging for bread to ‘… eat cake …’.

 

Far greater than the socio-political changes, this will be a revolution of the human heart. More important than a new ideal, or a mental affirmation that change must take place, is a fundamental transformation that can only come with a change of heart. More precisely, a reunion between humanity and his soul. In the age that has passed, mankind has concentrated on the accumulation of vast amounts of knowledge, believing the idiom ‘Knowledge is Power’. But what good is power without the attitude of heart to use it wisely?

 

Surely this pursuit has only given rise to greater corruption and hardship. Now humanity is on the brink of discovering the importance of guarding one’s heart, for it is the wellspring of life. If that spring is corrupt, how shall the soul ever be cleansed from such pollution? Yeshua said of the eyes that they are the ‘… light of the soul …’, and then warned that ‘… if that light is darkness, how dark is that soul? …’ By the same token, if the soul is left unattended, it will atrophy. The result of this is that the entire psyche becomes deformed and corrupt. This is why there is the promise that humanity will be given a ‘… new heart …’, or rather that the heart that has withered so that it resembles stone will be restored to become a heart of flesh once more.

 

The most powerful, and consequently the most feared, faculty of any truly sentient being is that of the imagination. Without exception, all invention begins with imagination. Once a concept has been visualised, it will no doubt soon become physical reality. Whether it was the first fire, to the invention of the wheel, and even on to the exploration of outer space … none of these would have reached fruition but that someone imagined that it was possible.

 

The same principle applies to one’s environment. It will perhaps come as a surprise - O Reader - to discover that you can create your own reality! Let this be an explanation of this astounding truth: The people with whom one surrounds oneself will be those who agree with one’s self-assessment. Normally this works in the negative: One will drive away any who contradict one’s self-image. If a person believes that he or she is not worthy, or has limited capabilities, does not deserve love, affection, validation … that person will attract people to reinforce that self-opinion. The same applies even to the ‘God’ that the individual will worship. If one is led to believe that one deserves only punishment and damnation, then that person will either find or even invent a deity that agrees with him or her. So - in a sense - one can create one’s own god.

 

But, the question is, who are you really? Are you the sum of everybody else’s opinion of you? Are you an individual despite these opinions? There is an erroneous saying: ‘I think, therefore I am’. The reason why this is incorrect is that one continues to exist even when one is not consciously thinking, or else we would all cease to be when we sleep. There is another idiom that states the secret of life is: ‘Unto thine own self, be true’. There is great depth of wisdom in this, because it is to the real self that one is urged to be true.

 

And who or what is this real self? To answer that question in depth, one should consult one’s Source. The king of ancient Israel did this, and he stumbled upon an astounding discovery. He says: “… I am fearfully and wonderfully made …!”

 

Before going any further, one must examine the manner of being that was this ‘King’, this ‘David’: Was he a perfect man, free of shortcomings? Was he some form of hero or demigod like those spoken of in mythology? The answer is a surprising: ‘No!’ This was the one who, having begun an affair with Bathsheba, sent her husband - a noble man, and a courageous warrior - to die in battle against the Philistines in an attempt to justify his behaviour. It was he who turned a blind eye to the misconduct of his children, the worst of which led a rebellion against his own father that divided the kingdom in two … And yet, despite all this, a scholar would later refer to this flawed being as a ‘… man after Yahweh’s own heart …’!

 

Instead of inspiring a sense of piety, are these figures not presented to us that we might learn from their shortcomings, and that we might aspire to at least some of their greatness? Even Yeshua’s life is set before us, not so that we might put our faith in Him to redeem or rescue us from our futility, but that we would see, and in our own way, emulate His way of life. But what if one does not aspire to be Christ like? Well then, perhaps the example of Saladin, Mohammed, Plato, Aristotle … may inspire one. Surely it is not the figurehead of a ship, nor the flag that she flies that makes her seaworthy, but the trim of her sails and the ability of her crew!

 

These figures do not stand out in history - or in legend - because they were any different to those around them, but merely because they were individuals who would not allow popular opinion, standard, or belief to hold them back. Even in the face of tremendous opposition, they held true to what their hearts would have them do. One of them said to His followers that if they would follow His example, they too would achieve what He achieved, and even greater things.

 

But is this not true of any great person? Mighty is the one who inspires others to follow him or her, even unto the same stature. How much mightier the one who would have his or her own aspire to even greater greatness? Those who would be leaders take notice of this: Do not be ashamed when those you have raised begin to outshine you. Rather be encouraged that the next generation will reach greater heights than the previous one. After all, one cannot stop progress, nor put brakes on evolution.

 

As it was at the beginning of time, so shall it be again, for the next stage of human evolution will bring the race of men to the point when they rid themselves of the shackles of mortality, or as one writer described it, 'the Mundane Shell'. As great as this step shall be, know that it is but a step. What follows thereafter? There are none this side of ascension who can say for certain, but if the process of evolution thus far is any indication, the future, after ascension, can only be brighter and more glorious than any that have gone before.

 

Small wonder then that you are encouraged to set your hearts on that which is above. Though whatever is beyond is not out of reach, it is still beyond the grasp of our mortal selves. But, as a traveller does not dwell over much on the journey, at the expense of concentrating on the destination, so are you advised not to concentrate on that which is passing, but on that which will abide after the physical has passed away. 'For all flesh is as grass', and the glory thereof as the flower that blooms when the sun is at its zenith, only to wilt again when evening comes. But that which dwells within these vessels of flesh is eternal, and the glory thereof will endure, nay increase until it is reunited with the One that created it. Therefore we have real hope, that no matter what befalls the Mundane Shell, the journey that we began as a simple unicellular organism floating in the primordial soup, will exist in an ever increasing degree of existence long after the Universe as we know it has ended.

 

These words that I have written are but part of a greater Truth. This light that I have lit is but a dim reflection, fraught with imperfection, of the glory that exists both beyond the boundaries of Creation, and - more importantly - within the heart and soul of every living being in this vast Universe. I thus invite you - O Reader - to take from these words perhaps some small inspiration.
