Past Intrudes Where Future Treads

Even when it’s locked up tight the past does not go away,

but carries on inside of me to where I am today.

Forgotten events lurk there, somewhere in my heart

bringing all these shadows which my brain wants to depart.

There’s no escaping history, I carry it on in myself,

but there’s no space in ‘Here and Now’ -- I put it on the shelf.

The ghosts they flicker dimly in the corner of my view;

don’t let them get a glimpse of me, I’m clinging on to you.

For if they find their way back home they’ll surely bring a chill

that is going to lead to frozen and they’re going to make me ill.

The past leads on to present, then on to futures day,

if they get a hold of me they’ll bring me to decay.

I don’t want to see these glimpses, I’d rather just stay blind,

the world they want to show me is one that was unkind.

Already there’s disruption, a feeling of great dread,

I need to get a hold on it, keep the past out of my head.

I don’t want to let the past of me mess with what’s to come;

an intrusion of the past would lead me just to come undone.

I’m going to need some back-up so I can lock it back away

Then the future me’s protected and the past – it has no say.
