A mortal cursed to live her days at sea attempts to accept her fate with an underwater God.

The gentle tide sways back and forth as a current pulls me deeper and deeper into the ocean. I’m happy to be home, but afraid of what exactly I’m coming home to. A school of silver fish scatters as I pierce through them. The water grows darker and colder the deeper I go losing all traces of light like a black hole sun devouring a star. I sense my body morphing – scaling skin, webbing fingers, and prickling gills from behind my ears. A curse I must embrace every sunrise. I hate myself for loving him, but this is the only way we can be together and I have finally come to accept my fate.

First, I hear him. His mighty sound waves crash into me like lightning striking the sand. Then my eyes adjust and the ocean floor lights up in ultraviolet. Finally, I see him. His skin glows violet freckled with crimsons and corals like mine and I want nothing more than to entwine and never part.

“Where have you been?” he roars into my mind.

He’s so furious; his thoughts throb at my temples. I try to shut him out, but a cursed mermaid is no match for a God. There’s no running, or swimming away now.

“Why did you break the surface?” his disappointment washes over me tenfold.

“I don’t know. I was bored,” I whimper and try to break through his mental wall. Nothing. “Let me in.”

A flicker of anxiety escapes him as he nearly yanks his hair out of his head. “I didn’t think you were going to come back,” he admits.

“Careful, your humanness is showing.” I don’t know why I think it. I know it’s only going to make him angrier. “I just needed some time to think…”

He looks at me with a tortured expression and I swear if we were on land tears would flow from his eyes. “You were looking for other options.”

“What?” I try to make him feel my shock, but he hit the target and I’m a fool if I think I can hide anything from him. “It’s so lonely down here.”

“I’m here.”

“You know what I mean.”

He desperately takes my mouth with his, fisting my hair and entwining our fins, so I can’t escape from his powerful grasp. I feel like another current is pulling me, but this time closer to his warm body. His mental wall drops like a sinking ship and everything’s he’s been holding back swims through me—fear, pain and ecstasy. I let my mind go blank as he fills it with nothing, but pleasure and agony. It cuts, binds, thrashes and tears me apart until I reach my limit and go limp in his arms.

I touch my forehead to his and I see myself bound to the ocean forever.
