One of my maternal great-uncles, who I hold dear now as I did then and a moment in time which to this day - is so vivid...

From the Mind of Doc
(Toy soldiers,  a child’s battlefield on top my grandparents cellar)

The trenches are dug. The soldiers are within, row after row.
“Boom!” sounds the artillery. “Rat a tat, tat, tat…” sounds the machine guns.
“Forward! Fire! Onward!” are the shouts in my imagination…

A shadow darkens my imagined battlefield.
He stands there, my great-uncle, a veteran of the “War to End all Wars”.
Silently watching a young boy play…

A tear slowly slides down his unshaven face,
As perhaps, in a memory, he returns once again to a day, a place, “over there”
When, unlike my imagined battle, it was real…

Your comments are sincerely appreciated. There are times when I "go back", that I have to sit and ponder... until I can get it "just right."
Thank you,
Doc Martin

Hi Doc, the innocence of the young and the experience of the old. You describe it well. Usianguke

Hello and thank you for your words.

A very young lad I was during the point in time of which I wrote...

My great-uncles face, I still see - and that tear...

Regards, Doc
