Numb

I’m numb to all the insults,

Numb to all the pain,

Numb to all the complaints

That are aimed my way again.

I’m numb to all those snide remarks,

Numb to the things I’m called,

Numb to all my failures

That you seem to applaud.

These little pills of numbness

Make it easier to cope

But it’s more a resignation

And way far less of hope.

They do not bring me deafness,

Your words are what I hear;

I soak them up just like a sponge

To echo in my ear.

Every day I keep on trying

But I’m set up to fail,

It won’t be long, my first mistake,

I can already hear the wail.

I do something for one of you,

Another will complain;

Walking on those eggshells

Is my life in the main.

There’s not much point in trying

But it’s easier when numb,

For the sake of my own sanity

I’ll just act deaf and dumb.
