I am looking at the monitor seated beside your bed. Several arrays of lines are going up and down and constantly making sounds. Thankfully, there were no instances where the monitor held up a screeching sound. It was always better that the lines stayed that way; constant beeping and no screeching.
I switched my line of sight and now I'm looking at you. You are still as beautiful as the first time I laid my eyes on you. Do you still remember how our story started? How unexpected it was? It was the day where my life became sweeter; where my life changed for the better. And it was all because of you.

We both were at the park that day. I was reading the newspaper, keeping track of current events while you were playing with Rose, your Golden Retriever. I was so into the newspaper until a ball hit me square on the chest and your dog suddenly leaped towards me. You hurriedly ran down to apologize but I never really caught your drift. I guess I was stuck deep into your eyes and was lost in your gaze that I never really knew you were apologizing until you told me again later that day.

Funny thing is, I think the ball was not really the thing that hit me that day. Nor was it the dog. I believe it was this thing we often romanticize in sappy dramas shown in television shows and in movies. It was this thing each and every one of us yearns to have. Some people get drunk because of it, while others go crazy over it. Most people seek it, while  only the fortunate few have found it. Luckily, we belong to the latter group. We never really tried looking for love. It just found us. Little did we know that Cupid would caught us off guard that day. Who would have thought that by throwing a ball at the wrong direction would pave the way for two hearts to meet? It really is funny. More so, it was unexpected. But often, the most unexpected events are those what usually surprise us in the end. Because of the events that transpired that day, we fell in love. And I thank my lucky stars every night because of it as they have given me the greatest gift that I could receive -- which is the gift of love in the form of you.

Being blessed to have been the receiptients of such a wonderful thing, we made the most out of the opportunity. Not everyone is blessed to have been given a person who thinks the same way like you do. We had the happiest moments of our lives together. We discovered every bit of what the world has to offer. We both conquered our deepest and darkest fears together. You could say that we lived life on the edge. And yes, we definitely lived it to the fullest.

But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. You were diagnosed with dementia after a series of events I do not want to remember. It was something I wish I did not hear. My heart was torn into a million pieces as I heard you cry upon receiving the news. And it was torn into a million more when you asked me, "Baby, why am I crying?"

Now, at this very moment, I am here with you in this room. As you have always been with me at the very beginning. You were with me when I faced my greatest challenge. You were cheering me on and constantly praying that I will be triumphant over it. You gave me the courage and strength to fulfill my dreams. Whenever I found myself to be on the verge of giving up, you always reminded me of why I started pursuing all of it. And it was enough. That gave me all that I need.

Now, it is your turn. This will be your greatest challenge. And as you face yours, I am here beside you, reminding you of all the wonderful memories we had together to keep you strong. From the moment we looked into each other's eyes until now, always remember that there are a lot of people who love you and who are waiting for you to come home.  You deserve way better than this and you know it. Even though your mind cannot recall your most cherished memories, please dig deep inside your heart for I know that way, you will find them. That way, you will be able to recall. That way, you will be strong. And that way, you will live. No matter what happens, whatever the outcome, I love you. Always, and in all ways.

As we wait for the doctor to come in, darling, please, take my hand. Because this moment might be all that we have.
