Reflection

I look in the mirror and what do I see?

A face looking back that is laughing at me.

The face, it is evil, with a malicious grin,

it does nothing to help with the mood that I’m in.

It’s a picture of blackness and total despair,

no chance of a glimmer of hope is found there.

I want to pull back but I’m caught by the gaze,

held in this place by the one who is crazed.

I move my hand up, the figure does too;

we both close one eye, ‘no’, what can I do?

This face of a demon, it will not let go

until I accept that my fate is just so;

it’s leering and jeering and howling with glee

as its message seeps through – that this monster is me.

I thump on the mirror, the glass it will break

but not one scrap of difference will this now make.

No longer reflected, I don’t have to look back

but my sanity has now been under attack.
