It's been a rough year... or better, a rough decade, for Zoe. It was hard for her to remember the last time she actually smiled. She was conquered by a great shadow. And she was not allowed to feel anything anymore, except a feeling of complete emptiness. She used to visit a doctor for those waves of sorrow she was suffering from. But no medication could help her. It was like she was trapped in this dark void. Soon she stopped looking for help and just isolated herself from the world. Those waves became stronger and more powerful until she surrendered to them. She let herself go, and sunk into the infinity melancholy and sadness. And so the years passed by, deforming and distorting poor Zoe.

Our misery is like a false note song into the ears of gods. Annoying in degree of punishment. Of course it is rare for a god to listen to a mortal's distress. After all, gods have different priorities. But Zoe's song became stronger and louder through the years. So loud that a Pan managed to hear it. Her song sounded so ugly to his ears he actually made him want to become deaf. Not able to endure this dissonance, decided to leave his nymphs for a while and find this human who was responsible for this awful song.

He visited Zoe a dawn while she was sleeping, and cautiously smelled her hair to find out about her life. Within a few seconds the semi goat god saw Zoe's life and understand why her song was false note. But he still could not stand it. Quickly he ran to Dionysus, the only god he could trust, and told him all about that woman's song. He made him listen to it and seek to his advice or help.

Zoe woke up having a strange feeling. It was like she was still sleeping. Without realizing it, she took off her pajamas and dressed up. She left her apartment and start walking around like she was hypnotized. Pan was walking behind her playing loudly his flute, leading her steps. She walked for a long time. She passed through her neighborhood, which had changed a lot since the last time she had managed to get out. She passed the whole city and the huge public park in the forest. Until she arrived inside the forest on the mountain. She reached to a cliff and then she stopped and so did the Pan's flute. Without a second thought she took a few more steps in order to fell from that cliff and end her misery. Just before the last step, a hand grabbed her and pulled her away from death and inside a strange man's hug.

“What are you doing woman?”, he asked. Although she tried to give him an answer, she could not utter a word. She just stood there looking at the stranger's eyes. “Why?”, he asked again. Knowing very well she was unable to speak to him while she was in his arms. He enfolded in his arms tight allowing her to burst into tears. "Do you know what your life is to me?", he asked once more, but this time he prefered to whisper in her ear. "A glimpse of an eye. It ends before it even begins. So it's foolish to waste the little time it's been given to you by being sad.". After a few moments of pure silence, he let her go from his arms and carefully wiped her tears with his hand. Then he placed that hand to his mouth and tasted her tears. "Bitter...", he mumbled. "So damn bitter.", continued. Suddenly a flask appeared in his hand.  “This is better.”, he stated and had a big sip out of it. Then he offered the flask to her. "Have some happy juice woman. You indeed need it.". Zoe tasted his wine, thinking it was different than all the wines she'd ever tasted in the past. It was only then when she realized that her savior was standing naked in front of her.

Pan was back to his nymphs enjoying the silence in the wild, playing his flute, carefree, once again. Dionysus stayed a little more with the mortal female. They drank three flasks together and finally he mated with her in the forest. "Do not allow to yourself to grow up, again.", he said to her before he leave her. "Stay young inside. Stay fun. And when you find it hard to do so, sing, dance, make love, have a little happy juice... do whatever works for you to remain joyous.", continued.

It wasn't the first time the playful and cunning god used the mortals for his benefit. He was enjoying to make them suffer and then set them free. He was forcing them to kinda rebirthed through him. This little game of his, continued for ages. And nobody, not even his fellow Pan, knew about it. From Dionysus point of view, happiness, mirth  and joy were only valued by humans after the taste of wretchedness. And so far, no one has proved him wrong.
