Your words struck me

Sharper things in October mist

Unanticipated

Unprompted

And I walked to my car

a distance so small

became so large

Each step had a weight to it

Compounding

Until my feet were planets

In unknown galaxies

Spinning

and finally inside my car

I couldn’t help but look back

And see.

two windows and ten feet

became a chasm

Peering over the edge

I couldn’t help but feel dizzy

And blame its creator

And those jagged words she uttered

so carelessly

Key in the ignition

reluctant

I let the car rumble beneath me

a reminder

I can escape the one who uttered those words

And put a thousand miles between us

But I can never escape those words.
