Is it worth collecting up the pieces and sticking them back together?

Picking Up The Pieces

I’m picking up the pieces that are scattered on the ground;

collecting them, amassing them, all the bits I’ve found.

So many little pieces, I’ll need them every one

if I am going to be capable of getting this job done;

so I’m searching and I’m scouring for all that I can see,

the pieces that together form an essential part of me.

I cannot see another piece so I will spread them out

but as I try to make them fit I’m beleaguered by doubt.

Perhaps it would be better if these parts I pulverize,

grind them down to nothing, into pieces powder size;

then I wouldn’t have to worry because there would be no pain,

no more going through it all again and then again.

I don’t want to let you down so maybe I can cope,

I’ll stick it all together, add a little bit of hope.

So here it is, this battered heart, complete but it is marred,

all covered up with brittle bits, appearing very scarred.

I’ll put it back into its place, a thump will make it start;

a smile, a word of kindness, and I’m back to play my part.
