Sachiko is born a girl in the eta community of Izumo, a girl with low prospects as to life and what she can expect. After escaping from her crooked family, she is swept into the world of the miko by a young girl named Okuni, discarding her old name and her identity. Together, they enter the Izumo Shrine. But Okuni longs for more, and it isn't long before her longings lead her to a less than worthy profession as a dancer. Steadfast to the end, her loyal companion Umi stays by her side, through the most challenging times a person can face, and eventually her ultimate wish is granted. But how will she survive the ultimate betrayal? The tale of two women, the founder of one of Japan's most well known theatrical traditions, and the woman who loved her.
