Erecting Barriers

You are erecting barriers, putting up fences,

shoring up your own defences;

are you anticipating my attack?

That would require a drive I lack.

The pain that I endured before

is something I won’t take once more;

it sent me reeling, made me crash,

left me feeling much like trash.

My own defences are in place,

There’s no chance I’m giving chase;

My heart was damaged, left with a crack

that won’t withstand another smack.

So go ahead – your rules impose,

they might not be the ones I chose,

But don’t you worry, I’ll obey

and within those limits I will stay.
