Painting By Numbers

I’m going to paint a picture here

but I’m no good at art;

it’s broken into sections

and numbered part by part.

Brown it is, not too dark

with gold specks, for the eyes,

a darker shade will do the hair,

I’m not bothered with disguise.

My skin, I’m told, has got real pale

so I’ll mix up pinky cream;

under eyes need purple though,

it can be quite extreme.

Now, emotions swirling round

are mostly kind of dark,

but sometimes when I talk to you

they’re lit up with a spark.

Broiling blues and stormy greys

with streaks of indigo and red,

a nasty jaundiced yellow,

just go swirling round my head.

I’m going to paint my heart in

but the red I now do lack,

it’s really not important though --

my heart is surely black.

Now that I have finished

I sit and wonder why

I put all this effort in to

something that won’t dry.

The paint it is all dripping,

it really is a mess

but the image it’s projecting

is quite a likeness, I confess.

I’m going to put my foot through it,

this canvas that I hate

and maybe sort my colors out

if it’s not too late.

But I’ll not paint another picture,

not on any other day;

I don’t want to see myself at all --

I’d rather hide away.
