Leave Me Behind

Leave me behind… I never asked to be with you. I never wanted to do this to you. I never wanted to grow attached to you just, forget about me. I’m not important to you anymore. I don’t want to harm you any longer. I don’t want you to be suicidal because of me.

“Just, leave me.” I said with despair.

“I’m trying!” You replied to me, filled with anger. I breathed in.

“Leave me, it’s not that hard.” I said patiently.

“I can’t!” You shout. You were right. No one can let go of me that easily, no one can. I hoped that you’d be different. However, you weren’t. You were like every other person I’d ever been with. Coming to me at a young age. Regretting it immediately. Not able to let go. I tried to help you. But you made bad decisions. So I stayed with you. I can’t leave you now. You’re suicidal, but if I don’t leave, you’ll be even more sad. I want to help you. Clearly, I can’t. I’m sorry. I really truly am sorry. Sorry for everything.. I want to apologize, to everyone, but I can’t. I have no voice. Only you can hear me, and only you think I’m helpful. Others think I’m trouble, they think that I do only bad and nothing good. But the truth is I’ve saved your life a countless amount of times, and it wouldn’t be so strange, if I didn’t look exactly like you. If I didn’t sound exactly like you.

“Don’t jump.” I said to you. Trying to keep calm. The truth was, if you had jumped, I would have too.

“Why not?” You said, tears flowing down your cheeks. Hair blowing in the wind.

“Because, you have future ahead of you.” I said.

“You just have to let go of me, let me fall. Head first into cold water. Let me leave. Then, and only then, you will be free.” I said sadly.

“But, I can’t. I’ve grown to hate and love you.” That was also true. Sometimes, I can be the best thing in the world. Sometimes I am the worst thing that has ever happened to you.

“I’ve saved you before. But right now, if you leave me, you’ll save yourself.” My words echoed through the wind.

“You’ll be lonely.”

“I’ll be fine.”

You closed your eyes, and took a deep breath out. I started to fall. Head first into a river. Slowly, my appearance changed. I became a ghost. I was no longer with you. You were free. I looked up. I saw you staring down at me. Tears flowing.

“I’ll be alright, I was just depression in your head.”
