Out in The Summer Air

The sun shone bright and clear

Their laughter grew more near

The grass rose green

And the kids grew lean

Out in the summer air

The nights were hot and dry

Not a creature did but fly

The lakes grew warm

And tans the norm

Out in the summer air

Then one day the boys were men

They left one at a time and then

Their mothers wept

Their things were kept

Out in the summer air

A car would sputter through the haze

And mothers then would turn their gaze

To catch a view

Of boys in blue

Out in the summer air

But boys in blue did not appear

Not in that way at least, I fear

All boys came home

Not one did roam

Out in the summer air

The boxes came that day of loss

With stars and stripes there laid across

Faces downcast

Flags at half-mast

Out in the summer air
