Down The Rabbit Hole
Poem by: hullabaloo22
Down The Rabbit Hole.
Down the rabbit hole, making like Alice,
I never expected to meet with such malice;
this place is so strange, so trippy and creepy –
I mean even the dormouse is feeling so sleepy.
The man in the hat is as weird as can be,
I don’t like the way he is looking at me.
He’s screwing his eyes up, inspecting my face,
I know he’s thinking ‘Why is she in my space’.
I thought from the book the Mad Hatter’s okay --
perhaps it’s just timing and he’s had a bad day.
The white rabbit, it hops up bearing a clock;
the way he emerges – a bit of a shock.
I want him to help but he just says ‘I’m late’,
and scurries and scampers beyond the locked gate.
And now with a purr and a swish of his tail,
the Cheshire Cat’s hideous, makes me go pale.
His eyes they are red and pull me right in,
he licks his lips and he gives me a grin.
This cat, he’s a giant, he stretches a paw
but really he’s ensuring that I see a claw.
The meow that he gives is not friendly at all,
I ‘m making a run for it and then I fall
to land at the feet of this woman – the queen,
the most haughty and hostile person I’ve seen.
She looks down her nose and I know with some dread
the words she will speak will be ‘Off with her head!’
But what have I done, what is my crime,
I’d love to ask but I’m not given the time
before fluttering onwards here comes her guard --
they are fierce, they are brutal, but just made of card.
There is a way out for me, I need a match --
a flame to the card and the fire it will catch.
I’ll hasten away, paying the queen no heed;
it was her that had forced me to perform that deed.
I race past the rabbit, I run past the mouse,
I’m desperate to find my way back to my house.
The cat, it is chasing, it loves the pursuit;
I dodge and then hide and past me it shoots.
The Hatter, he’s laughing, he’s completely insane,
delighted to witness the end of her reign.
The Queen of Hearts, she is finished and no longer rules
this land full of crazies and all sorts of fools.
Me, I wake up and I’m still in my bed --
this Wonderland thing was just all in my head.
