Just an idea for a short story that popped into my head.

Goodbye.

Goodbye,” she said and he did not know why. There had been no arguments, no upsets. It was just another day, like any other. He did not know what to say.

She turned away to hide the tears that were gathering in her eyes, ready to fall unchecked. She could not cry, could not let him see how much her heart was breaking. If he saw her tears he would reach out his arms to console her. No, she would not allow him to see.

But why?” he asked. “What have I done?” He was shocked, taken completely by surprise by her words. He had believed that they were happy.

It’s not you. It’s me!” She allowed herself to look at him momentarily, just a fleeting glance. Not long enough for him to notice the teardrop that hung from her lashes, at least that is what she hoped.

She heard him exhale. She could tell he was upset, confused. But what could she say? She had no explanation that she could give, just knew that she had to leave.

Please.....Don’t go. We’ll talk it out, whatever it is. It can’t be that bad.” He sounded so sad, so sincere. She was going to hurt him, she knew that, but not half as much as she was going to hurt herself.

I’m sorry,” she said, and she heard him moving towards her.

She put her hand on the door knob, turned quickly to shake her head. “Goodbye,” she said and walked through the door. As the door shut behind her she felt her heart shatter into a million pieces. She walked blindly away.

Your story is a testament of every day life, even though some of it may be sad. Great story. This kind of Flash Fiction is not easy right!

Thanks for that, Mark. I'm pretty new to flash fiction so your comment is truely appreciated.

One more thing - I find the best written stories are those that are written on a whim!
