Breathing Burdens

The whispers are louder

than the screams

that haunt the windows

and guard the doors.

They crawl down my spine,

trickling into the small of my back.

Their lips brush my forehead,

and kiss me goodnight.

Yet, they never leave,

only waiting outside—

their unrelenting breath

dripping from the ceiling.

The wood creaking

in the hallway

outside my ribs

is only a reminder.

That they see.

That they know.

That I can never leave

this home in my lungs.

A home built for one,

and occupied

with a burden

that takes my place.
