I am only seventeen;

This is a fact, that no one can argue or debate. I am seventeen, and in this election, I did not vote. Thus, my vote or who I believe should lead 324 million people does not count, but my words can. During this election season, I found my heart extremely troubled, and I often said to myself, I am thankful that I don’t have to decide right this second. (Also, take note I am very indecisive, and I weigh my options very carefully.) My political opinion is not the only political opinion. But as a citizen of the United States, I was blessed with the privilege to eventually vote. A luxury that came at a cost, a cost many nations still cannot afford, and live in constant oppression.

I ended up deciding I would vote for Hillary. Now, please don’t stop reading because I would have supported Hillary over Trump, that is not what this is about. This is about the mass number of people in America who don’t know what to do, what to think, or how to feel about the new President, as of January 20, 2017. First, I would like to begin by saying I do not fear Trump. Second, I would like to say that I will not run from him. Third, I think we are the answer.

The next President of the Unites States is someone who I didn’t believe should be given such an enormous and weary task. I did not like the way he talked about women. I did not like the oppressive undertones in his speeches. I did not like his fear of the outside world, and his willingness to build up walls. I did not like how he wanted to treat immigrants, for I know so many. My dad’s girlfriend, the girl who sat next to me in Tech class, my coworker, the family who sat next to me on the bus. People, real people, who have become so important to me. People who did not want to hurt this nation, but wanted to stop hurting in their own.

Yet, here I am. Writing something that I feel we as citizens need to hear, because this man just became the 45th President of the United States of America. I will not fear him. I will not run from him. I just hope we can open up his eyes. I hope for open ears to hear the cries of those who need our help. I hope for open eyes to see the oppression. I hope for an open heart to feel the pain of those suffering. I hope for an open mind, to listen to what the citizens think is the solution.

We cannot change the fact that Mr. Donald Trump is the next President. But we can change him. A man who did not do anything to deserve our respect, needs it. A man who only won the support of the majority, needs the support of the other side. I am not asking you to support Mr. Trump, but America. Let him see. Use your rights. The one’s he cannot build walls to take away from you.  Open eyes. Open ears. Open hearts. Open minds.

I pray America, that we would not let the next four years be in vain. Do not use violence, but use your words. Use your ability to rally together peacefully. Use your ability to stand up for what you believe in, to fight for America. Don’t spend your time, your energy, your words fighting against Donald Trump for the next 1,460 days…Spend them fighting for people, for freedom, and for peace.

I am only seventeen. I cannot vote. Although, I have been given the right to speak.
