Many of my international friends are asking how Donald Trump won the Presidency. As outsiders, it  is hard for them to understand how a brash real-estate mogul and reality television star is now the President-elect of the United States.

I offer you these five observations. Feel free to add your own.

Trump appealed to a part of the electorate ignored by others.

Many low to middle-class white people have had a tough time over the last thirty years. The lifespan of  white, middle-aged men in the United States has actually dropped as economic uncertainty and a loss of opportunity have created enormous stress in this population. If you have ever filled out a job application in the United States, you will see that you are asked if you are a minority, a protected class, or someone who deserves higher prioritization. White men do not fall into any of these categories. They have enjoyed privilege in the past, but many feel the pundulum has swung to far the other way and they are now under attack.

Trump dispensed with political correctness

Political correctness in the United States is defined as not saying anything that has the remotest possibility of offending someone. Most people do not want to intentionally offend, but political correctness makes a crime out of saying things like: "the beauty star has gotten too fat to walk the runway," or "if you resist arrest from a police officer, you might get shot." The entire Black Lives matter episode played right  into the Trump narrative. To his supporters, this was less an issue of race and more about people not cooperating with law enforcement. Most Americans are taught that  when a police office asks you to do something, you do it. If you don't, you could get shot.

Many found Trump's straight talk and lack of political correctness refreshing.

Trump had a message

Trump created a slogan and pulled his supporters together - Make America Great Again? It harkened back to a better time for many white Americans for when jobs were more plentiful, globalization didn't exist, and political correctness didn't rule the land.

Many men and women couldn't stand the Clintons.

This point is not to be undereestimated. Many people just couldn't stomach another four years with the Clintons in the White House. Women especially faulted Hillary for staying with her cheating husband. Many would ask: "what kind of strong woman stays with a man who cheats  on her?" She lost a lot of respect with the female vote. Trump may have offended by what he said, but Hillary offended by what she didn't do - leave her man.

People were also sick of the Clinton controversies. Bin Ghazi, emails, the Clinton foundation, etc. etc. They couldn't take hearing more of it.

Trump was unscripted

This goes along a bit with the politically correct point. But Trump presented himself as who he was, unscripted. He ad libbed and made things up. He sounded more  genuine as opposed to a politician who spoke off a set of talking points.

Trump represented change

Americans like change. A Democrat has been President for the last eight years. It's very hard for the same party to hold the White House for twelve straight years. Look at Al Gore. Trump was the change candidate and he presented ideas, that although controversial (deport illegals, build a wall on the Mexican border, keep out refugees from Syria, rip up trade agreements, etc.) represented a change in policy. For those not happy or tired with the status quo, then this is appealing, no matter what the change.

These are some of my observations. Feel free to add any ones that you think also contributed to his victory.
