The desert night was not one to reckon with- at all. Of course the moon shone in her lunar goodness but the cold bit with her antagonistic venom, coursing through the bones of her victims with unhesitant pleasure; and talking of victims, there was only one victim in this cold land of nowhere – Jorn. Jorn stumbled and fell face down into the sand. He grunted and shaking he got up to his knees, breathing slowly and weakly. He withdrew his small water can from his belt pouch and poured it into the can’s cap.He tilted his head upward and slowly lifted his shaky hand to his lips, some of the water spilled unto the desert ground, but he got some into his mouth. He heaved a sigh of content as the water slowly trickled down his hot, dry and parched throat. Some part of him desperately craved the remaining water in the can, but the warrior part of him persistently refused; who knew how many days he still had to stumble in this cursed desert? Would he be successful in accomplishing his mission? “No!” he said aloud. He had to accomplish it. He had to find Quebok and stop him from releasing Luciferus and stop the dreaded attack he had unleashed on the world and especially on his clan. I have to do it, he assured himself at least for his dad and Gina. He had been walking around the desert, for how long? He had lost track of time. It was a good thing that Quebok had not yet released Luciferus. Jorn gave in to his weakness and he lay flat on the desert sand. Tears flowed freely from his eyes as he thought of the remainder of his clan putting their hopes on him to vanquish the traitor Quebok. He thought of his father who had been lost for some years now - his dear father. He thought of his entire clan who were slaves under Nimreg. He thought of Gina who would be getting married to Nimreg’s fool for a son. All this thoughts swelled up in Jorn’s mind. He was a total failure, frustrated, tired and even with his gift could not even protect the ones he loved. This was too much for Jorn he let his contained emotions explode. He stood up to his knees and yelled at the sky. The vast desert carried his echo around. He fell down and began to weep. Far away in a large cave, the image of Jorn in the desert played in a bowl (carved out of rock) of water. As Jorn yelled and fell down weeping, there was a deep bass chuckle. A man’s face was bent over the bowl watching the scene. ‘The hero of Zuga, how pathetic’, the man said. ‘Renin must be such a fool, despite my obvious powers he still sends a boy to confront me’ ‘But the boy has managed to procure the… the… sword my Lord’, a large serpent coiled on the floor by his side said. “I know Mixza”, he said as he turned from the bowl and walked slowly away from it, the snake following him behind. “There is no cause for alarm he has not utilized his potential yet”. ‘Yes my lord’ the serpent said. The man stepped into the light coming from a few torches hung on the wall of the cave. He had an athletic body that was well chiseled, and his brown hair was tied to a bun. “Trust me Mixza, when the boy gets to his full potential, it would be too late!” He burst into laughter. Jorn was in an unfamiliar environment. The whole place was white; he was still turning around, trying to know where he was, when a voice spoke up behind him. He turned around startled to see Renin, the old wizard standing before him. “Renin”!, he said ,really glad to see him ‘How do you do?’, Renin said, managing a weak smile. “Is this a dream or something?” Jorn asked ‘Yes and No’ “I don’t understand”, Jorn said puzzled ‘Look, I don’t have the time. You must hurry, the only reason why Quebok has not unleashed the one is because he has not yet completed the preparation procedure, for his body to be able to host him; but you have to hurry, he’s in the final process.’ “Wait, wait, wait, wait, you don’t contact me for over three weeks, and now you show up telling me to hurry while I’m in a desert dying with no way out.” ‘I have to leave, the farther you get to Quebok’s abode the more weaker my magic becomes, but be rest assured I will send help to convey you out of the desert so you can get to Quebok quickly.’ “Wait!”, Jorn shouted but Renin had gone. Jorn woke up. It was day already. The good thing about the day was that he could continue the journey, but more worse than good was that he had to journey under the intense dehydrating heat of the sun. At about the middle of the day when the sun was at its peak, Jorn noticed a movement by his left. When he turned to look, he saw that it was sand, but strangely it had a large serpentine shape and the most unsettling of all was that it was moving sideways toward him. Jorn froze immediately, a desert snake. He began running but stopped short when he saw the same thing at his front; he turned around and saw that he was surrounded by about five of them. Jorn was distraught. He had not seen a desert snake before and when he saw, he did not see one but five huge desert snakes. They hissed ferociously at him and Jorn was sure, even with the sword in his possession he still could not kill these things. He drew out the sword, the sound of steel filling the desert air. The serpents began advancing slowly. All their gazes were fixed on him. Where was the help Renin had promised, Jorn questioned? Now was the right time for it. As if on cue, he heard a very large shriek from the air, he thought it was from one of the snakes but then he heard one of the snakes howl and saw that their eyes were on something in the air, he was relieved. He watched as the other snakes moved in to attack the biggest and beautiful eagle he had ever seen. To his surprise the bird did not fight, instead it flew towards him and before he knew it he was in the air in between the eagle’s talons. ‘Aaargh’, Jorn screamed, ‘I thought you came to save me’. “I am saving you” the eagle spoke directly to his mind. “There is no time, Quebok summons the evil one tonight.” ‘What!’, Jorn shouted,’ I’m not even prepared yet’. “You don’t need to”. Saying this, the eagle flew with the speed of the wind. It was too much for poor Jorn as he fell unconscious. Jorn woke up feeling much stronger than he ever was. It was night. The eagle was nowhere to be and he was no longer in the desert instead he was in a vast barren land with withered trees and. Far off , he could make out the shape of a very tall mountain. With a start he knew the mountain; he had seen it enough to have remembered it off heart. It was mountain Gin, the abode of Quebok. Quebok was summoning Luciferus tonight, he had to stop him. He marched with haste towards the mountain. Quebok was making final preparations to summon Luciferus, he tied a red ribbon round his arm and stood at the edge of the circle.’Mixza’,he called out. ‘It seems our little hero has finally arrived, annihilate him.’ “With pleasure”, the serpent hissed slithering out. Quebok stretched his left palm sideways and a mummy ran forward placing a cup in his palm - the magic potion that would endow him with the power to summon Luciferus. When he had finished he closed his eyes and began the incantation. Thing were not going well with Jorn as he battled the serpent but after a while, he saw the slightest opening he was looking for and he obliterated the serpent with lightening from the sword. By the time Jorn got to Quebok it was too late. A huge dark mass, radiating evil that he had never felt before, entered the body of Quebok. Quebok shook for a moment and then his body was still. Then he turned, not Quebok, but the one – Luciferus. He had the same body of Quebok but dark thick smoke covered it; but his head was not the same. His head was like thick darkness compressed together to have a definite headish shape, with two bright and blazing green eyes. “Little hero”, he said,” you’re too late’.Jorn only looked at him fear showing in his eyes. “Now, you will have to watch your loved ones and the remainder of your clan die, you failed them.” ‘No! ’Jorn said drawing his sword. “You would want to wait a bit; I have a surprise for you. ”Saying this Luciferus using magic brought in a man floating on the air – Jorn’s father. ‘No!’, Jorn screamed, ‘Father!’ “This would be the first consequence of your failure”, saying this he pierced one of his overgrown talons into his father’s chest.” ‘Nah!’, Jorn screamed. He fell to his knees and wept. At this moment he felt the consuming desire to destroy Luciferus. He surrendered totally to the sword, he let go all parts of him he had restricted to the sword. Suddenly there was a bright golden glow around Jorn, he had been transformed and he now shone bright. “ I see you’ve finally touched your divine potential, but its no use!”, Luciferus said as he lunged at Jorn transforming into a large dark mass of evil. Jorn fought and fought for a long time. A bright light in the middle of darkness, but Luciferus was overpowering him, and darkness was swallowing the light. “Surrender, little one its no use”, Lucifer laughed. Jorn was tired, he had surrendered to the sword but yet he was not winning. I thought light always defeated darkness, he thought ‘Oh yes it does’, a voice he could not identify said in his mind, ‘but you are fighting him with hatred so you are as dark as he is. Forgive him.’ It was true, he was light but not pure light there was a speck of darkness in him and as long as it was there he would not defeat Luciferus. He looked at Luciferus and smiled. “You wish to surrender, do you? Luciferus asked. ‘No’, Jorn answered. “Then prepare to die fool!” Luciferus raised his hands to strike. ‘But, I forgive you.’ Luciferus’ arm froze midair. He was totally shocked and his green eyes showed it. “No!”, he screamed as the light radiating from Jorn’s body grew more brighter and stronger, rapidly swallowing the darkness until Luciferus was destroyed. Finally, Luciferus was destroyed and the world was safe again, now he would go and save his people from slavery. He looked at the corpse of his father. He was very sad and devastated, he walked slowly to his body an idea forming in his head and his face transforming to that of determination. He knelt at his father’s body. He was light and life came from light. He placed his hand and covered the hole on his father’s chest. He closed his eyes and willed light from him to flow into his father’s heart. Suddenly his father gasped and opened his eyes, Jorn was amazed and happy, he had finally fulfilled his destiny and his father was alive. He hugged his father and they both laughed. It had been two years of separation but now there was nothing in the whole world that would ever separate them again.
