Let’s Pretend

Let’s play a game of ‘let’s pretend’ to brighten up the day,

you can just be anything as long as you will play.

I don’t want to be a princess and definitely no queen,

a jester is more like something that I once could have been;

you know, the one that fools around to amuse and entertain

and when others go adventuring at home will still remain.

You can be an actor or some big superstar,

I’ll remain invisible and watch you from afar.

You can be an astronaut and go walking out into space,

I’ll sit down in that corner where I’ll try and hide my face.

Perhaps you’ ll be a wizard and you’ll make the invisible appear,

you’ll make it so that I can speak and someone else might hear.

Perhaps you’ll be a scientist, one that changes the whole world,

I’ll just go on reading, into some fictitious place I’m whirled.

But this game of pretend has worked out wrong for you don’t need to change

and it hasn’t really worked for me and that seems rather strange.

I’ve still remained invisible, someone who isn’t heard or seen --

but ponders how the years have gone and built that massive screen;

the one that’s like a barrier that I just can’t break through

and leaves me right outside of things no matter what I do.
